Peroxide ratio
    #19160331 - 11/19/13 03:54 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Yo,
Dunking 2 PF cakes right now; been colonizing for 2 months! I rinsed and cleaned them as usual, put them in a 2 qt container with cold H2o, but want to add some peroxide just in case. Not sure on the amount though if anyone could advise I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

:whathesaid:  Not sure where you got that idea from.

We ONLY use peroxide if we have cobweb mold.

Other than that, it is useless for this hobby.

I've had bacteria/contam problems lately and wanted to add a precautionary measure. I can see bubbles forming on the cake and rising since adding the peroxide which I figured was bacteria frying away. But if you guys say this aint the case, I guess I will dump that water and just use regular tap water. There are pins/fruits on both cakes. Thanks,

Peroxide is not going to help anything...it will only damage the mycellium.

Peroxide reacts to air anyway so after the peroxide reacts off and the cake is in your fruiting chamber think about all the contamination that's going to land on it every second and especially when you mist and fan. If your cake came out of the jar without contams then you're golden.

Not true, h202 and vinegar make excellent non-toxic disinfectants.
Cheaper than ISO too.

To answer the original question,

Peroxide sold in the united states is already diluted to the level
appropriate for killing bacteria on mycellium cakes.

If you buy your peroxide in brown bottles its been diluted to 3%
and is okay to use to battle cobweb.

If you're still weary, you can dilute it 50/50 to a level
of around 1.5%.

Bacteria is not harmful to your cakes once they're fully colonized. So even though bacteria will be growing in the dunk water it doesn't cause problems.
