Death For Your Beliefs

Okay so this is a purely hypotheical question. lets say that you have a DECENT opportunity to make a huge impact on the world for the benefit of earth and/or mankind and your beliefs. However there is a catch, you have to become a martyr to motivate and inspire the world and afterwards there would be a huge battle for freedom and liberation of like minded people and they may lose or win and you have no idea of the outcome and how this will turn out.
Do you take that risk and martyr yourself or would you sit back and just enjoy the rest of your life knowing that everything is likely to go downhill for the rest of humanity and the earth in general. What do you choose?

I'd do it. But my views on death are radically different than the average person's.

I'd also do it although I'd like to at least live till thirty or so before I make that choice but I'd still do it.

My utilitarian ethics would demand that I sacrifice myself, if I was reasonably certain that the outcome would be as described.

I only live once and I'm way to selfish to sacrifice my life for the good of others.

I would sacrifice myself, or at least that's what I'm gonna say on the internet..
I would like to believe I would sacrifice myself, and that is my answer, but really this is a hard one to actually know until it happens.
I bet in real life many more people would choose to live long and healthy, even if they genuinely think they would sacrifice themselves...
I have strong beliefs and I really do think I would sacrifice myself for them if I would actually get noticed for it and it would make a difference, but unfortunately I don't see that really happening... If strapping a bomb to my chest and running towards the white house or some shit and blowing myself up would honestly make a difference then strap me up!
Of course this is all hypothetical, and I don't know how I'd really react if someone was actually strapping the bomb to me right now...
also, did you get this idea from Kyle being a martyr the other day on South Park?
...and fuck off NSA, I don't have any bombs!!!

I'd do it, and I don't even believe in an afterlife of any kind, my existence is in the grand scheme of things, brief anyways and upon death I will cease to exist so I may as well make that happen a little sooner if it will truly help people.

No way. My life is more important than this planet or anyone on it. I'll help out, do what I can to improve the situation to a point, but giving up my chance at existence is never in the cards. Not knowingly anyway.

This would all depend on what the agendas of the like minded people are. If it's to create some socialist utopia, no I wouldn't. It would have to be a concrete, well thought out plan that I knew beyond any doubt would succeed as long as my comrades won.
Kicking out all illegal immigrants, legalizing all drugs, permanently banning islam, christianity and all other religions from affecting political legislation, taxing churches and mosques, focusing tax dollars on infrastructure, ending the welfare state and forcing politicians to swear under oath that they have read each and every bill start to finish before voting on it, might be enough to get me there.

That's the entire point that some of you guys are missing...You don't KNOW if it will succeed and you have no idea of the actual turn out. Your martyrdom would only ensure that a war would be again for your personal cause that you wholly believe in.

There's a difference between not knowing the outcome of the war, and not knowing whether your side will actually benefit society or not in the event that the war would be won. Belief is irrelevant if not backed up by fact.
Going by your last post, no I would not sacrifice myself to start a war for vaguely defined benefits to mankind that are based entirely on the subjective beliefs of like minded people. I would maybe start a think tank instead, that way neither myself nor the future casualties of the war have to die.

A war that will likely succeed, or one that kind of sorta might work or might fail ~50/50 even then its worth it for some causes
