How can I do some things to insulate my house against cracks and drafts etc.
Also a window froze open in my kitchen. Its a double set of sliding windows and with only the first layer of glass to shield against the cold, unless I get it closed somehow, I'm buying insulation and putting it on the outside of that window. So I'd love some advice on that to avoid a eyesore all winter

I use the plastic stuff around the outside of windows in the winter, especially in bedrooms. And I think they work very well. Most of our windows are a bit drafty so they are necessary. Each room in the place I am in now has its own floor board heater so if I can keep the individual rooms from getting too much cold air in them I don't have to turn the heaters on very high, if on at all.
Also check your front/back doors. I have had some good drafts coming from the bottom of the doors so in the past I just put a towel up next to them to keep it out. It is a bit annoying putting it back each time you enter the door, and you really can't do much when you leave. They make things you can buy that slip under the door and move with the door so it is always blocking the air flow when you close the doors.
Something like this

And for your frozen window, unless your house is near freezing I don't see how it would just freeze shut. Try a hair dryer to it for a few minutes until it moves
Oh and wear a couple layers of clothes in your house, that way you don't have to have it as warm to be comfortable. A decent pair of slippers can go a long way as well.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to see what I can do about that window, and stopping the cold from penetrating to deep.

it needs to be facing south. Which shouldn't be difficult if your greenhouse has sunlight coming from the south. I don't know what your backyard looks like either. this website has a wealth of info http://www.simplysolar.supporttopics.com/

This is what i bought.. but dont buy it online LOL. Go to lowes, home depot, or any similar store and get it for $1.25. All you do is apply double sided tape around the fram of your window, then cut the sheet of plastic that comes with it and apply to the doublestick tape, get a blow dryer and blow dry it so itll shrink tight.
It provides a gas layer of air that has to heat up before it releases heat into the home through the window, so if you add a layer itll reduce the heat loss by atleast 20%. But i added like 5-6 laters for 5-10$ and bam its like i have double paned windows now

NOTE... I checked my shrink wrap the other day, the one i told you about.... had mold all over my windows and somehow got into my monotubs. So be very careful if you do choose this route.

yeah it should be noted it traps the moisture and condensation from a window and doesn't give it much chance to escape, so be careful. i've cleaned and changed the sheet a few times during warm days when moisture buildup was just crazy
