Need advice on building a PC (~$600)
    #19161890 - 11/19/13 08:36 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

It's getting to be about that time where I need a new computer. My current laptop is over 4 years old now and can't handle everything I want it to. I just need something more up to date for around $600-700, just on the tower, no periphs. Nothing too powerful, I won't be playing the high end games.

The last time I built an full computer from parts must have been 6 years ago, so I'm a bit rusty. I don't know which brands are best to go with, but I still know how to find parts that match and can compare specs.

On the other hand, I found a pre-built alienware machine for $700 (tower only) that will be going on sale for $600 around black friday. After reading some reviews and watching youtube videos, it seems to be what I need and I don't mind the mini case.

Alienware X51: DPCWXY01H (the basic unit for $699)

CPU:
i3-4130 Processor (3MB Cache, 3.40 GHz)

RAM:
6GB (1x2GB+1x4GB) DDR3L 1600Mh Non-ECC

HDD:
1TB SATA 6Gb/s (7,200RPM) 64MB Cache

Video:
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 645 with 1GB GDDR5

Now what I need to do is build a computer that has similar or better specs than this alienware. I tried a few days ago on newegg, but had trouble finding the matching parts and kept coming out a few hundred over budget.

Any help is appreciated, even if it's just recommending a motherboard.

Just spending a couple minutes on newegg to try and generally match those specs.

$129.99

Total: $437.95

That leaves over a hundred seventy five to pick out a case and power supply that fits your taste/budget/decor , and the specs you posted on that alienware build are exceeded in the area of both RAM and videocard. I'm personally partial to AMD builds, but these low wattage intel builds look interesting but I think you could get more for the money with AMD though.

Regards.

Good stuff. I swapped out a few of the parts with upgraded parts that came in combo deals or were only slightly higher in price. Total price on the tower came out closer to $700, but oh well.

Also found a 24 inch monitor, disc drive, keyboard, and some additional fans. All of this brought my total to just over $900, but there are like $80 of rebates in there.

I'll post the list up tomorrow and hopefully be placing the order within the next couple of days.

Thanks Ellis Dee, you've been much help.

And screw you alienware. You almost had my money.

Yeah, those slightly higher price parts really kill the budget builds, lol. And its so easy to to widen what you consider the "sweet spot" between price and performance. And those side things, like do you really need new computer case, moniter, and stuff. The price really goes up with all the little things. I do the same thing though, I start with a budget build and end up with specs for a dream machine. lol

To be honest, I put a low $600 goal on purpose, because I knew I would do exactly what I did. I've got the spending money, so it's not an issue.

And I do need every part, I'm coming from a laptop. All I've got is a mouse. :P

Use the onboard video, haswell igpu on higher end cpus (not like the i3 in your dell mini pc)  is pretty decent...

Total cost $587

Battlefield 3 playing @ 1080p on Intel HD 4600 (what's included w/ processor)... probably low settings, but playable...

If you have a few more coins to toss into it for future proofing, for an extra $39:
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 650W ATX12V/EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply

This psu is solid for a single power guzzling graphics card...

And then you could add some decent midrange card for $150 down the road like 650ti boost or 7850

Pretty sure I want a dedicated card right away, so I'll stick to the CPU and vid card I found.

But that RAM sure looks nice. Is G. Skill the brand to go with as far as RAM? Right now I've got some Corsair sticks in my list that have the same specs as the one you posted, but for a few bucks cheaper.

And for power supplies, do you know if there is anything wrong with choosing a Cooler Master? The reviews I read were fine, but if corsair's are that much better, I might as well go with them.

Well, $199 is just too much money for the i3 cpu you are looking at - really, get the i5 quad core for $20 more, it's an excellent CPU....  Or compare and see what last year's ivy bridge i3 CPUs look like - haswell isn't really faster and it's just not worth it to spend that kind of cash on an i3...  The i5 i linked is a phenomenal cpu and I'm sure you won't regret it if you're looking to spend $200 on a cpu, it's worth that little bit more... anyways, find somewhere else to save the cash if you need it, like a different case than the $129 one you linked, which is a great case, but working with a tighter budget there are better options.

Coolermaster is hit and miss, really depends on the specific PSU, they rebrand a large variety of other PSUs... But at that price point I'm already sure it's nothing to write home about and nothing I'd want to drop a 650ti in...  A solid, reliable power supply is an investment  worth making...  It's really worth spending a little more on a PSU...  For a little less, look at this one @ $74.99 SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze 520W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS 12V v2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151093

G skill is very reputable ram company.... I've never owned any, I tend to buy Crucial ram these days (used to buy Corsair), but I truly wouldn't worry about it.

Edit: ah wait, I didn't realize since you had listed the cpu and the motherboard twice in your first part list w/ cash amounts by both there was only one price for both....  Yah, I guess you are saving a hundred bucks so strike that.

Just for kicks I put together a machine I would build with that budget just for comparison of the value of an AMD vs intel build. Left out the moniter, speakers, and keyboard though. Added multicard reader/writer and blue ray burner instead of dvd burner.

Corsair Carbide Series 200R Black Steel / Plastic compact ATX Mid Tower Case
    Item #: N82E16811139018
$59.99

Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit
    Item #: N82E16822148910
$99.99

    MSI 970A-G43 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
    Item #: N82E16813130679
$59.99

CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
    Item #: N82E16817139027
$59.99

Koutech IO-RCM632 USB 3.0 Support SD/CF/xD/MS/MMC. Multi-in-1 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Front Panel Internal Card Reader with USB ...
    Item #: N82E16820162035
$31.99

    AMD FX-8320 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.0GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8320FRHKBOX
    Item #: N82E16819113285
$159.99

    LG Black 14X BD-R 2X BD-RE 16X DVD+R 5X DVD-RAM 12X BD-ROM 4MB Cache SATA BDXL Blu-ray Burner, Bare Drive, 3D Play Back (WH14NS40) ... - OEM
    Item #: N82E16827136250
$79.99

    ASUS HD7750-1GD5-V2 Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card
    Item #: N82E16814121633
$99.99

    G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR
    Item #: N82E16820231416
$79.99

Subtotal: $731.91

With this 8 core setup you can overclock to 4.1 or 4.2 ghz easy, OC the ram to 1800, holy crap man. And I upgraded to blue ray burner and added a multicard reader which you'll need since you're starting from scratch. I think this setup would far exceed the intel setup. Only difference is that the AMD doesn't have onboard video like Intel chips do, but that doesn't matter because you're going with a higher end video card.

I know I'm partial to AMD, but when you compare the specs on builds that cost the same to me its a no brainer. I know corporate outfits and government always like intel, and I never can understand why.

Damn that is impressive. I've actually got someone else PMing me so switch over to AMD as well, and it is sounding pretty convincing.

In fact, a few years ago I used to be all over AMD, but fell out of the scene and just accepted intel. And like you said, I'm not really sure why... :okay:

Based on specs alone, yeah, AMD is the winner, but I need to find out how that actually holds up in performance before making the decision.

By the way, this is all great info coming from both of you. I'm learning quite a bit of what was forgotten over the years.

And, CJ, I can let the price go up a lil more yet, and you're right about the i3 I had listed. I'm not gonna get that. I'll be looking up the i5 you linking and some AMDs.

I'd recommend intel, they use way less power and even the dual core i3-4130 outperforms comparably priced 6 core amd chips for gaming... but other tasks like video editing i'm sure the six core would win out, but games generally don't take advantage much of multithreading... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-3.html

read this, and then look at the cpu hierarchy chart at the end along with the performance per dollar chart....

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Re: Need advice on building a PC (~$600) [Re: CosmicJoke]

So I decided if I'm dropping this much money into it already, might as well make it worth the cost. Went and chose parts that would allow for easier future upgrading as well.

So, the $600 on the tower price range is no longer relevant.

Anyway, here it is. I'm sticking with intel, and this build is pretty much final. What do yall think?

I've built so many rigs over the years.  I personally love AMD for my budget builds.  Stability and heating are never issues for me, great bang for the buck, and super easy to change the clock on it.  Black editions don't even require a change in voltage settings to increase the clock speeds.

Don't get me wrong.  I would say that the high end intels are better overall, but only by a little.  Not worth the massive price difference on an AM3+.

Plus, I hate intel drivers.  I have to have all of this shit running just to get my 3tb hdd to work even though the motherboard was supposedly made for it.

Another thing you should consider is SSD.  Best damn upgrade I have ever done.  The capacity is small, so load your OS, antivirus, and whatever games you happen to be playing at the time on that as a primary drive and a HDD for the storage drive.

Eh, I'm going to stick with intel on this build.

And SSD would be amazing, but like you said, they are small. My machine is going to be at least half used for media files and such. Can't believe 2TB is less than $100.

if you go intel, you might consider at least an i5.  Bottlenecking processes on a brand new build is a good way to piss yourself off lol.

Sorry I should have read your updated list.  It seems that you are giving up on the budget build.  I can give you a few suggestions if you want to save money and make a great pc.

The cpu/psu bundle is unnecessary.  You only need 500w for a single gpu, which will run 59.99 for a nice corsair.
CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

You might consider Micro ATX.  A full size MB is appealing, but are you really going to use it?  If you aren't running a multi GPU setup or having 6+ hard drives, you are just wasting space.
ASUS H81M-A LGA 1150 Intel H81 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

If you aren't going to use a SSD, I would STRONGLY suggest spending a little more money and getting a 7200 RPM HDD.  5400 is only useful for storage, and will slow your system to a crawl no matter how fast your processor is. Again, I cannot stress how important the hard drive speed is.
Western Digital WD Black WD2002FAEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive - OEM

If you go with a micro MB, you can get a smaller case too.  I use this one for my latest build.  It's simple, compact, and has USB 3.0 ports.  It does take a little longer to set up due to a smaller space to work with, so you will need zip ties for your PSU wires. Comes with front and rear case fans already.  Totally worth it for a little bit more work.
Fractal Design Core 3000 FD-CA-CORE-3000-USB3-BL Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Hopefully this helps.  Feel free to ask me if you need assistance with your build.  You seem like you know what you are doing already but it is nice to get different opinions too.  Best of luck
