P. candolleana?
    #19160873 - 11/19/13 05:45 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I have a bunch of these in both my front and back yards at the moment, and I'm hoping to put a name to them.  I'm very comfortable calling them Psathyrella sp., but I'm not sure candolleana fits.  Candolleana are common around here, and the pileus seems wrong.  It seems too thick and doesn't have the rumpled character that I tend to associate with candolleana.

In any case, on to the descriptive portion.  The samples are from southern california.  The lamellae are free, and the pileus has subtle radial fibrillostiy, but otherwise lacks structure.  Spores print dark brown or burnt umber.  The stipe is hollow, fibrous, and easily crushed.  They are growing in soil on a lawn, and I'd call them gregarious.  The patch is approximately 25 square feet, with about 50 individuals in small groups, and lacks any discernible structure such as a ring.  No veil, no pellicle, etc.

I feel like there is a palpable difference between these specimens and the p. candolleana patches I usually find.  Are there any alternative species this could be?  I get the feeling that it would come down to microscopy, and frankly, psathyrella is kind of a mess right now.
