Hello My first attempt at bulk coffee ground substrate for Portabella, in 24"x18"x5" tub. Do I need to add a casing before fruiting? Or is there enough nutrients in the coffee grounds to support it

Just out of curiosity, where did you ever get the idea that you could fruit Portabellas on coffee grounds?!

Portobello is Agaricus bisporus, which is a shit-eating mushroom.

I think it actually may grow on coffee grounds. two things I would be most concerned about would be that it would contam relatively easily cause coffee grounds pack tightly and the PH might be too acidic. I don't know that dung is all that different though. Nitro rich, prob slightly acidic, containing a fair amount of cellulose, Do post pictures of this experiment though... did you sterilize or pasteurize? If you did neither than it almost certainly will not grow. Also how are you inoculating? with spawn?

It's not a dung eater, it's a secondary composter. Meaning it would eat coffee grounds as long as they were composted.
Most commercial setups are a mix of straw with chicken manure (as a supplement) and then composted together.

The key word there is composted. I doubt they'll work unless you do. RR

It is possible that you could grow say Pleurotus on the material then use that composted material to grow A. bisporus.
