What's the problem with the boletus this year?
    #19160891 - 11/19/13 05:49 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

This year we've had some yo-yo-ing temperatures, maybe 10min 15max deg Celcuius for a few weeks, then maybe a few weeks of 15min 22max days. Rain's been heavy at times and then scarce on the ground, often followed by said warm periods, leading to dry soil all around before the next shower.

There was a big flush of Boletus, both edulis and erythropus (recently renamed to something more amusing I think), about a month ago, but the mushrooms got about half normal size and then all turned white and rotted within scant hours. 'Good' specimens of var. edulis were invaded completely with larvae. Var. erythropus seem to be less appealing to the larvae, as they are to my palate.

Is the weather destroying the Boletus, or is something more sinister afoot?  Could it be some kind of infection? I read they "can be infected by the parasitic mould-like fungus Hypomyces chrysospermus, known as the bolete eater, which manifests itself as a white, yellow, or reddish-brown cottony layer over the surface of the mushroom".

Most likely Hypomyces chrysospermus

Where I live, when I find any Sp. of Bolete they are usually: A, filled with worms/maggots or B, being attacked by Hypomyces. But I do find some early enough...Just not as many as I'd like.
