Cyanescens Picking Ethics...
    #19160881 - 11/19/13 05:47 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Checked out my cyan patch today and it was a bit... ravaged. Nothing too terrible but it looked like the recent stormy weather/squirrels/dogs/random tweekers took a bit of a toll on some of the fruiting bodies.
So I was checking in to see what the general consensus was on picking damaged mushrooms with regards to the overall health of the patch.
Is it okay to pick immature mushrooms with more than half the cap gone? immature mushrooms that are decapitated? immature mushrooms with a partially broken stalk? pins that are completely blue and look like aborts? This is my first year picking cyans so I was just checking in to see where other people are at on the issue. Obviously I would like to keep the patch healthy and robust.

Some examples:

decapitated stalks

blue pins

missing half a cap

stalk snapped

whaddya think shroomery?

I would leave all of that, and catch it on another day...when the fruit bodies are mature.

also, you call that ravished?  Looks like someone used snippers and left all the pins.  I'd say that's pretty polite.  The heavily bruised pins could have become that way because of the cold temps too.  Just my two cents.

The blue fucked up looking pins are aborts that quit growing for whatever reason and how do you know slugs didn't eat a bunch of the caps off? I've seen it many times.

So would those aborts be legit to pick? Will a mushroom reach maturity if its stalk is severely snapped? Kinda think too that I'm the only one (human) pickin' at this patch but could be wrong...

If you don't pick the aborts they will rot. I bet all the destruction to that patch came from natural causes. I would pick all the messed up ones and the ones without caps or gills, they won't do anything but turn to mush if you leave them.

I don't know, to me it looks like the back half of that cluster was all cut pretty evenly.

Thanks for the input mjk. That's pretty much what I was thinking but I wanted to check in. Rather have have 'em turn to mush in my stomach than on the ground...
