in all honesty you'll probably be fine either way, but I would take the tap off anyway.

I believe It all depends on how good of a seal your lid/tub already have

well i taped it because the seal sucks lol. its got little openings on the sides. but i dont know, its already in a trashbag as well anyway, so the tape is probably pointless

Just use some paper tape/ micropore instead to allow it to breathe

No need for taping the lid.
The bad fit of the lid along with the small hols for the latches provide enough gas exchange.
Don't keep it in a trash bag either.
Good for liners, that's about it.

hm why shouldnt i have it in the trashbag? the room i have it in gets a lot of sunlight so i figured the bag would keep it from prematurely pinning?

this is my first tub tho so im only speculating

:whathesaid:  Also, taping the sides of the tub is pointless, as light does not cause side pinning, FAE does.

This is why we use plastic liners INSIDE the tub.

It will shrink with the substrate as it consolidates, sticking to it, stopping FAE(the main pinning trigger) from hitting the sides.

This will eliminate side pinning....blocking light will not.

Light is only a pinning trigger AFTER full colonization and FAE.....and even then it's only secondary.

Jars/bags/tubs/trays should colonize @ room temperature getting ambient/indirect light.

Main pinning triggers are full colonization, FAE and Evaporation off of the substrate.

Light is a secondary pinning trigger. For tropical species temperature is not a pinning factor.

Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

You want ambient/indirect light(on a 12/12 schedule preferably) for colonization and consolidation.

You want direct/intense 6500K light on a 12/12 schedule for fruiting.

Thanks Hacker, i had heard that before but i ended up doing it this way anyway lol. i guess im pulling it out of the bag and taking the tape off the top.

as far as the lining is concerned, ill make sure to use a liner next time but for this tub i actually kind of wanted to see the shrinking process and see how side pinning affects it overall
