First scope?
    #19156413 - 11/18/13 07:34 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys. Looking into getting my first scope for this season. I don't want cheap shitty one with a little mirror. I need it to be of decent quality, able to plug into a Mac for screen shots, and of moderate price (a couple hundred). What do I need to keep in mind and specifically look for and avoid when choosing one off amazon?
Thanks.

Look for a 100x oil immersion objective and solid design with a bright light/diaphragm. Alan Rockefeller usually suggests something like this basic scope and using a normal digital camera to capture images.

I'm no familiar with oil immersion. So none of the ones that plug in are very good?  Usin a camera on top of it sounds kind of ghetto but I guess if it works for Alan...

That one looks similar to the cheap one ive had... Hmm. Wish I knew more about them...

If you already have a DSLR get an adaptor for that, if not then get a digital eyepiece.  Amscope sells lots of them.

Omax also makes good cheap scopes.

Yes, probably a good idea, though I don't have much experience with those.

Also there are some stage micrometers for $13 with shipping on ebay, it would be a good idea to order one before your scope since they come from china.
