Best way to store inoculated jars? alot of mixed opinions out there
    #19158765 - 11/19/13 09:13 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys, so i just finished innoculating my 24 brf cakes . Now my only issue is storing them to hopefully ensure the best results. Currently, they are in their original box inside of a black trash bag on the top shelf of a closet in my room. Before i put them in there i emptied the closet and sprayed it down with lysol. The closet seems fairly clean (as clean as any closet is i guess). Temp stays around 73 up there so i figure that would be fine, just wanna make sure my jars are in a good place!
I pressure cooked the jars with micro pore tape and foil over them.  I have seen some people say keep the holes covered after inoculation and some poeple say leave them open. They are currently open as I have a layer of dry verm.

Light is beneficial during all stages of mycelium growth.

Hopefully you've added a filter of some sort, SFD, Tyvek...

You also have a layer of dry verm if you've followed the tek.

You want the cakes to be able to expel gas from the container (GE)

I wouldn't wrap them in a black bag personally.

Filter? do you mean like micro pore tape over the inoculation holes? because i notice in the RR video he just leaves the holes open, as i thought the dry verm layer acted as a filter against contams

it wont hurt if u put a micropore tape over the wholes,

or u can learn how to make lids like this with some rtv silicone and tyvek or polifyl as a filter

I'd suggest that as long as you keep the jars (containers) away from potential external contamination.  Seal the jar well and put them in tightly covered container.  Trash bag isn't idea if you have to move them around.

Light is not necessary during incubation period.  Higher temperature could potentially fasten the growth.

No guys what are you saying?
Keep them on a shelf in room temp. If you're comfortable, so is the mycel in your jars.
They also benefit from ambient indirect light.
Don't wrap them in anything, no need to spray lysol, just dust the surface area with a moist cloth or something.

You also don't need to re-tape the micropore tape after innoc,
but if you dont do it, leave the jars alone.
Your verm barrier might fail if you handle the jars too much,
contams will land on top of the verm.

you're fine as long as you don't disturb it so it gets in the mycelium.
Important that you remembered to wipe the rim of the jars before you steamed them.

THANK YOU for clearing that all up . the other few answers didnt seem right to me. and yup, wiped the shelves and walls down and sprayed some lysol just for good measure. Wiped the rim of the jars before inoculation and put a layer of dry verm down. Thanks for the re-assurance! Now its just time to play the waiting game  :ifindthisboring:

I hope you meant before sterilization.
You can't open the jars afterwards, they gotta stay sterile.

Otherwise it's all good
