why are azures more commonly grown than cyans?
    #19158505 - 11/19/13 07:21 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

One question that I have is why azures are commonly cultivated from spores and available from many sites, and why are Psilocybe cyans less commonly grown and available?
There are many named varieties of azures and no cyans that I am aware of.
I am planning on trying to establish a woodlovers patch and wondering if their is something about cyans that make them less desirable in cultivation.

I dont know,

I could opt for a guess.

Perhaps the difficulity to grow, different growth mediums
temperature, overall yield, having to use cardboard/wood
rate of failure.

Overall ease of growth?

Azurescens are more potent on average than Cyans.

The answer is very simple. Someone, some 30 years ago, tested and 'determined', from one dry sample, that P. azurescens is the most potent psychedelic mushroom. That made it the most desirable mushroom to have and grow. And people still believe that today.  And spore vendors don't want to persuade them otherwise, because P. azurescens is very rare in it's natural habitat, while the other psilocybin containing woodlovers are not, and could easily be obtained by trading from people in the west coast of the USA.
Numerous bioassays have determined that most of the wood digesting Psilocybes have equal levels of psilocybin, specifically, P. azurescens, P. subaeruginosa, P. cyaenscens, P. ovoideocystidiata and P. allenii, and that P. azurescens is no way as potent as it was made to appear in that one scale.

So are all the woodlovers the same in terms of difficulty to grow outside and inside other that different temperature requirements for fruiting?

More or less. From what I've seen on this site, P. allenii and P. ovoideocystidiata are the easiest ones to fruit both outside and inside.
