About to do an inoculation, dropped syringe on floor, should I dip in 100% alcohol
    #19157739 - 11/19/13 12:00 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I'm about to do an inoculation and I dropped the syringe on the floor (no needle - it shipped separate, have to put on before inoculating)My question is, should I trust just flame sterilization of the needle to be sufficient or should I dip the entire syringe in Denatured Alcohol 100% to use it's solvent properties to remove any nasties that got on to the body of the syringe?

You could wipe the whole syringe down with alcohol first, then attach the needle, then flame sterilize the needle.

Use 70% isopropyl alcohol, not 100% denatured...70% works better.

The extra water content helps penetrate cell walls more efficiently.

Thanks for the reply.
Agreed on the 70% for bacterial wall penetration, but I'm hoping to use more of the solvent properties of alcohol to remove the bacteria and mold spores on it.  I'm not hoping for even sanitation, just removing all the excess mold and spores that may have attached that were on the ground.  Alcohol at any concentration does nothing to kill mold or spores.  I'm unsure of the power of it's solvent properties in relation to stripping a surface of spores.
