Just curious if anyone has come across any?

Beautiful. Thanks Alan
I'd love to get some mycelium and transplant into a forest here in Aus

I assume these also share a symbiotic relationship with various pine trees like other Lactarius species?

Those are really beautiful. They remind me of a fish for some reason. Really like this photo:

I'd love to find this species although I think it's highly unlikely given their distribution.

From the pictures it appears to be gorgeous, and that blue latex kicks ass.

I found them for the first time this year! It was pretty high on my list

All the ones I found were growing under Magnolia...

No, they pretty much have no flavor and a crumbly texture.

But you can make excellent food with them if you add the flavor yourself.

They are good for making natural green eggs and ham.

Is it just me, or do they have a smell that resembles blueberries and lemon?

Thanks!

Unfortunately I found these while on a road trip, and not even being sure where I would sleep next; I had no desire to collect all the mushrooms I found and acquire more luggage...

I finally gave in and bought a new car, Hopefully I'll be able to find some time and I'll find these in my own state!

I didn't really notice a smell, but my olfaction is pretty poor.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Power of suggestion probably plays a role as well. I've told a few friends and my wife that they smell like blue berries and lemons, and they all agreed after smelling.

I think you'll find that Biosecurity Australia have a strong opinion on that one

Still, I know exactly what you mean... I'd love to travel to Adelaide and get some of that Boletus edulis mycelium to inoculate some trees here in Tasmania!

20120609-CRW_1357

The flavor is nothing to write home about, but if you find the small version (some call them Lactarius indigo var. diminutivus) they make great mushroom poppers. Slightly nutty.

For what it's worth, I think they smell like Fruit Loops :awesomenod:

Yeah!!!

Those poppers look great! When I found them, it was right after doctorghosty had eaten some and he said they weren't great. I decided that I would pass on them, despite the tasty smell.

I find them quite frequently between July and Aug under Oak. I usually find them by sides of paths or in camp grounds where the land has been stomped upon.  If you cook them and then add them to scramble eggs with ham you will have green eggs and ham.  Really.
