End of the world in less than 100 DAYS according to Viking mythology

Great Odin's ravens! The world is set to end in 100 days but according to Norse mythology the mighty Thor could save the day.
Viking folklore had its own take on the apocalypse called Ragnarok which would involve gods smiting each other, the sky stained with poison and three freezing winters - so we're a third of the way there already.
Norse experts have calculated that the viking gods are going to start flinging magic hammers at each other on February 22 2014 as Thor's dad Odin gets mauled to death by a wolf which will get the ball rolling for the armageddon.
Skandinavian cultural boffins at York's Jorvik viking centre have heralded the beginning of the end by blowing a sacred war trumpet.
Mythology states that the god Heimdallr would blow the magical Gjallerhorn to warn of Ragnarok which means Doom of the Gods. This will alert Odin's sons like Thor to the battlefield.
God of thunder, Thor has remained a cultural icon as a hero of Marvel comics most recently in the movie Thor: The Dark World.
Ancient Swedes, Danes and Norwegians believed that first a freezing winter would come, then all morality would disappear and fights would break out all over the world.
Then wolves would eat the sun and the moon and finally the daddy of gods Odin would bite the dust at the fangs of another lupine menace.
After Odin's demise, the world will sink into the sea but then rise again as a new utopia.
Jorvik viking centre boss Danielle Daglan said: "In the last couple of years, we’ve had predictions of the Mayan apocalypse, which passed without incident, and numerous other dates where the end of the world has been pencilled in by seers, fortune tellers and visionaries.
"But the sound of the horn is possibly the best indicator yet that the Viking version of the end of the world really will happen on 22 February next year."
The legend states that "the first to notice shall be man, brother will fight brother and all the boundaries that exist shall crumble."
Viking experts have pointed out that boundaries are already crumbling through social networking, so if Loki and Thor do start brawling in your back garden maybe consider closing that Twitter account.
Ms Daglan said: "The idea that “boundaries that exist shall crumble” could be said to be about the Internet age, where you can communicate with millions of people simultaneously around the world thanks to the global rise of social media."
Another part of the legend suggests that the Midgard Serpent will rise up from the ocean much like the two huge fish which appeared on a California beach last month.

Ragnarok: Viking Apocalypse Will See World End in 99 Days
Just a year after the Mayans wrongly predicted the world would end, Nordic mythology has foretold the End of Days with a Viking Apocalypse.
The countdown to Ragnarok has begun, with just 99 days until the world ends on 22 February next year, Norse experts have said.
A horn announced the start of the countdown from a rooftop in York. The horn belonged to the Norse god Heimdallr, who was believed to have blown it to warn people of their impending doom.
Norse mythology says that the god Odin will be killed by the wolf Fenrir and all of the other "creator" gods will fall. The world will then be born again and will be repopulated by two humans.
During the world's end, the sun's beams will become black and the weather will become treacherous, mythology states. "Brothers will fight and kill each other, sisters' children will defile kinship. It is harsh in the world, whoredom rife - an axe age, a sword age - shields are riven - a wind age, a wolf age - before the world goes headlong. No man will have mercy on another," a prophetic poem says. Ragnarok
Experts from the Jorvik Viking Centre say the end of the world will coincide with the grand finale of the 30th Jorvik Viking Festival in York.
Danielle Daglan director of the festival, said: "Ragnarok is the ultimate landmark in Viking mythology, when the gods fall and die, so this really is an event that should not be underestimated.
"In the last couple of years, we've had predictions of the Mayan apocalypse, which passed without incident, and numerous other dates where the end of the world has been pencilled in by seers, fortune tellers and visionaries, but the sound of the horn is possibly the best indicator yet that the Viking version of the end of the world really will happen on 22 February next year."
The festival will run between 15 and 23 February in locations around the city of York and visitors will be offered to eat and drink like Vikings.
"During the week of the Jorvik Viking Festival, we will be doing everything we can to equip the people of York, and visitors from afar, with the tools to survive the apocalypse, from hunting for the mightiest and strongest warriors to training children in combat skills," Daglan said.
"Following a study published in 2010 that bearded men are more trustworthy than those without, we're also looking for fantastic displays of facial hair, so that we can identify those with the potential to take us into the brave new world that is foretold to follow Ragnarok."
Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust, said: "Visitors can expect to see Vikings wandering around just about every street in the city, including a parade from York Minster to Coppergate, learn about Viking combat, continue the tradition of telling ancient sagas, and then join us for a spectacular night-time Festival finale at the Eye of York on Saturday 22 February."

immanent ˈɪmənənt/ adjective adjective: immanent
1. existing or operating within; inherent.
"Immanence refers to philosophical and metaphysical theories of divine presence in which the divine is seen to be manifested in or encompassing the material world. It is often contrasted with theories of transcendence, in which the divine is seen to be outside the material world. Immanence is usually applied in monotheistic, pantheistic, pandeistic, or panentheistic faiths to suggest that the spiritual world permeates the mundane."
Totally appropriate to the discussion of Ragnarok.

They don't, though. The Viking apocalypse isn't immanent. It isn't imminent either, but it certainly isn't immanent, and you know it.

Its interesting that this Viking apocalypse follows so soon on the heels of the Mayan Calendar.
I think the memory of the Mayan thing is too fresh for people to really freak out about this one in the same way.
It would be interesting to know if this one had come first, if all the fuss would have been about this one instead. Or do people put way more stock in the Mayans then they do in the Vikings?

/serious face
Well in all fairness to the Mayans I don't think they ever predicted an apocolypse. Their calendar turned over was all. And somehow the Aztek sun stone got mixed up in the mainstream media with the Mayan calendar. I don't think any scholars did anything but laugh and facepalm at what the media did with the Mayan calendar story.
Now whats the evidence that the Vikings left this prophecy? Weren't they a society that passed ther epics in an oral tradition?

Both imminent and immanent are real words, and by coincidence they both apply in this case, but Enlil is right- I meant to say imminent when I wrote it, its just a coincidence that immanent also technically applies (from a believer's point of view).
