Oregon Liberty Caps?
    #19156770 - 11/18/13 08:57 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys!
I've seen so many pics of libs here in Oregon but you can never be too careful.
These BIG bad boys are in my grandmas cow pasture (cows have grazed here for years) and its been raining.
Just need some second and third opinions.
Pretty sure they are lib caps.
And nice ones too.
Thanks

Oh and how much should someone eat to get a nice fry going on?
Dried or no?
PEACE!

Sorry, they are a Panaeolus species.  Compare with Panaeolus papilionaceus.

Wow really? That sucks lol.
I hope that's a common mistake...
What difference should I be looking for?

Here are several ways to distinguish the two:

Psilocybe semilanceata caps have a clear separable pellicle, and a striate margin when moist.  You will not see an appendiculate margin (white veil fragments) on a liberty cap like you can on these Panaeolus.  Also, P. semilanceata stems are very pliant.  You can bend them without it breaking easily.

Other differences are evident as well, but those ones should suffice.  Good luck next hunt!

There are plenty of images of Liberty Caps on the web and right here on this site. A couple of distinguishing features that come to mind are a distinctive nipple at the top of the cap, and the fact that the stipe (stem) is flexible and strong enough to be wrapped around your finger.

Shrubs or decaying grasses in lumps. Heres some of their favorite shrubs, almost always find them in these.

And these are what you're looking for

I'd recommend going towards the wet areas of the fields. Sometimes i'd be standing in shoe high water when finding them. They also like fence lines, planted trees, or tree lines of fields.
