Thank you for the quick replies. I did not smell the mushrooms as I am new to all of this. My daughter who is 3 is fascinated by mushrooms and wanted to ID them for her safety to. At first i thought maybe some portabella's made it to our trash and then in to the raised bed. We amend our raised beds with kitchen scraps for next spring to plant our vegetables. For fun however, we have been growing Oyster mushrooms mycelium indoors in jars to learn more about growing mushrooms.
Appreciate all the help. Fascinated by all the information here on this forum.

If you dig up a whole mushroom making sure to include the base and cut a section through the base, does it stain yellow?

Agaricus californicus grows like gangbusters in my garden every year, they are kinda cool to look at but completely useless to me and they smell like cleaning supplies.

Agaricus bisporus is likely. If you have a microscope, check to see if all of the basidia have only two spores.
One very helpful thing with Agaricus is to put a drop of KOH (potassium hydroxide solution, 5%) and note any color change reactions.
Another thing to do is to scratch them and see if it changes color, and then scratch them a lot and see if you can pick up any particular odor, particularly odors of almond or ink.

Actually smells like almond (earthy). Doesn't smell like cleaning supplies. At first that's what i thought it was Agaricus californicus. Tried my best to compare it with pictures to the look alikes. I will try scratching them to see if there is any particular odor. What type of odors should i look out for?

Here is another one that's older. i kinda cut up in to pieces about 5-10 mins ago. To see if it would stain yellow or smell funky. Smells fresh earthy/almond like. As far as color stain looks brownish white no yellow.

I have several of these growing. Would love to do a spore print if all is good .
