Mushrooms and Micro-greens Greenhouse
    #19130262 - 11/13/13 07:46 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I’m and urban grower of vegetable crops and fungi and am in the process of turning a 24’x12’x8’ greenhouse into a mushroom and microgreen growing combo.

Last winter/spring I had luck growing oysters in a small low-tech greenhouse mixed in with head lettuces, chard, and other odds and ends. All the plant crops were grown in beds on the south side of the greenhouse. In the middle I attached a shade cloth, which shaded my 5gal oyster buckets on the north side. All ventilation was passive, and when the temp was too low the structure was completely closed off.

We saw some excellent results using this system. My thinking is that the natural temp swings, high humidity, and the symbiotic relationship between the plants (oxygen) and mushrooms( CO2) produced good results. My goal with this project is to determine the viability of growing plants and fungi in an enclosed environment. On the south side of the greenhouse I plan on building shelving for micro greens and plant seedlings for late winter and spring. The north side will have hanging oyster logs and shelves for shiitake and king oyster.

I’m having trouble deciding whether to add pea gravel for the flooring or to just leave the soil. Does anyone have experience with pea gravel? Another question I’m considering is how I should regulate humidity. My last grow did well just spraying it down once or twice a day with the water hose.  I have two-3 disk pond foggers and a 6 inch 240cfm fan I was thinking of making into a bulk humidifier, but don’t know if it is necessary.

Over all, I’m stoked to be growing mushrooms on any scale, and am hoping this works well for us. The mushroom/veggie scrap compost I’ve been making is excellent and people have been loving the oyster mushrooms at the farmers markets. Looking forward to all the valuable knowledge the shroomery has to offer. This is a great community and I want to add to the cumulative knowledge. Any questions or concerns are appreciated, I need all the help I can get.

nice job!  You will need to humidify in temperate climates during winter months due to lower relative humidity.  esp since you are sucking dry air in for fae.  go with the pea gravel.  dirt is gonna ge MUDDY pretty fast.

Thanks Amanita, we're definitely more on the temperate side here in North Texas, but the winters are mild. I'll go ahead with the pea gravel tomorrow, and start working on automated humidification later this week.

I just installed the exhaust and intake and its running great. Really moves that air. Pictures as soon as I get more work done.

I made some good progress today with the help of a volunteer. We dug out a couple inches of the greenhouse interior, leveled and laid plastic. Wheeled in one cubic yard of pea gravel. We also completed a bunch of the finishing work. Installed electricity, thermostat, and sealed the majority of the greenhouse.

Should be able to start fruiting mushrooms early next week. I have a few blue oyster columns that are nearly colonized so I need to hurry. I've yet to start building the humidification device, but I'm thinking of using a 120 quart Coleman cooler. Still don't know how I should connect my 6 inch inline fan to the cooler? Suggestions are appreciated.

What substrate are you using for microgreens?

What exactly are microgreens? I came up with nothing when I googled it.

Horticulture, I'm using a mixture of our own compost and some recycled potting soil from a research farm in my town. About 50/50.

Micro-greens are similar to sprouts except they are cultivated in a soil or soilless mixture and grown until their first true leaves have shown, then harvested. We have had a lot of success with mustard and radish. I add them to most dishes:crazy2:

I attached the 40% shade cloth to the greenhouse and I'm not sure its enough. Seems like a higher percentage is going to be needed to shield the substrates from our intense afternoon sun exposure.  Also put the first columns in the greenhouse last night. With the temp at 90° today I wonder how they will fruit. Its supposed to be cooler tomorrow but for now I'm spraying the floor every couple hours.

I'll post more pics when I can.

Nice Job on your greenhouse! looking forward to seeing it full of mushrooms and greens.

I use a simple outdoor greenhouse like yourself, in an arid hot area also. I first just used a blue tarp for the top and let clear plastic on the sides, but found many blocks with direct sun exposure where getting burned. Covering most of GH with opaque tarps worked to protect the mushrooms, especially needed considering I have zero shade.

Over the past year or two I've mostly been growing oysters and lions mane in the GH andh have not run into trouble fruiting either until it got above 90 in the GH. Even during 107 heat, the misting system has been able to keep it around 88.

Good Luck!

Thats great Pseudo, what type of misting system do you have in your setup?

I just use inexpensive patio misters, combined with adequate ventilation it keeps things cool and humid enough through the hot and dry california summer.

Good to hear these misters work well for you. I'm thinking of using a misting system like this with a timer and solenoid valve to regulate humidity and cooling in the GH. Do you have any experience with something like this http://www.amazon.com/Galcon-6-Station-Irrigation-Propagation-Controller/dp/B00ES8NRKU/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1384873375&sr=1-1&keywords=propagation+timer

I need to automate this system soon.

Actually I was just looking into picking up a something like that as I tried a cheaper sprinkler system timer and  could only come on by itself once or twice per day.

This video we did a few months ago of our solar powered pump system might give you a few ideas.

If you have access to water pressure, I don't know that I would go to the length of having a pump and reservoir, but you can use the same arduino system as the timer for a sprinkler valve and plug a hose straight into it.

Made some headway on the GH today. Finished the railing for the hanging subs and attached a shade cloth down the middle to shade the substrates. I also finished a lime bath bulk sub run and stuffed the straw into bags. Here are some pics of the first fruits growing in the GH. We put these substrates in the GH Saturday night.

Thanks Nanncee, I think a similar system is going to work. The water pressure at my house is intense so I think I'll run a water hose to a propagation timer with 24V valve, and misters. I need the mist for the evaporation cooling effect and the humidity too.

The first flush had a nice pin set but small fruits. Lately all we've been growing are stunted, thick, and forming in singles or small clusters. They often form pins on the inside of the bag too.

We spray the whole area twice daily (Humidity between 50-100°). Fan ventilation is on a thermostat, and it's been really cold lately so no ventilation. Could this be leading to the poor fruitage??

shiitake looks over supplemented.  Should even out after a bit.

The oysters don't look stifled or dry.  Are they still growing?  How cold is it?  Maybe they are just growing real slow.

Where did you get your culture?  They both look similar and not quite like anything I've grown.  Little chunky buggers

Hi, I'm SpeakSoftly's partner.
I think we added too much grain to inoculate the sawdust blocks. Made with 100parts sawdust to 20parts oat bran to 10parts gypsum.

They are still growing, it's been 20F and around 40F in the GH.

Maybe we're just impatient.

The first three are from Canadian Fungi Supply, Oyster "H". The middle two are Aloha cultures. I don't remember if the shiitakes are CFS or not. Just that they are called West Wind and Night Velvet.
