ID Req: Is this Galerina sp?
    #19154523 - 11/18/13 02:42 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Living in Seattle, WA.. Found on woodchip/roots. Did not take samples so no spore prints. They seemed to break really easy from the stipe when handling. The caps are slimy, fairly meaty, wavy when young, then becoming almost perfectly convex with age. The rest you can see from photos.

Galerina marginata I think but don't quote me on that.

Kuehneromyces lignicola seems more likely.

Stipe was bare with no ring from what I saw/remember.

kuehneromyces vernalis maybe. The gills are wrong for Galerina IMHO.

How fragile/hollow are those stems?  Brittle?  I'm thinking Psathyrella or maybe Pholiota.

They broke very easy when I went to pick up the bunch. I was thinking Pholiota too, but these are so much prettier more caramel like browner than the other Pholiota babies I have seen in this area. But who knows. They don't look like Psathyrella.

I'm going with Psathyrella, can you spore print them?  Many Psathyrella species start off with white gills and I bet it was pretty wet where they were found?

It's wet everywhere in Seattle right now. Actually, they are in some peat moss, but on the outer edge of a building kind of exposed to sunlight. (I guess the water from the building would drip down on them).

I believe them to be. Not sure about OP's though. I'd think Psathyrella but I'm terrible with LBMs.

They strike me as a Hypholoma.  The young ones look a lot like H. capnoides pins.  I'm curious how the spore print turns out.

they kind of do, yeah, but if they are all the same species, then they should all have striation in the caps to some degree- like in the middle picture.

But its kind of hard to tell with these pictures.

I'm starting to doubt Psathyrella...wonder what color the print will be...

I think kuehneromyces is likely, but that's just my opinion.

To my knowledge, kuehneromyces is the only one that is viscous when wet like that.
They almost look like they have a pellicule.
"The clustered shiny convex caps are 6-8 cm in diameter. They are very hygrophanous; in a damp state they are shiny and greasy with a deep orange-brown color towards the rim; often there is a disc of lighter (less sodden) flesh in the middle. In a dry state they are cinnamon-colored."

The caps are pretty similar...I would love to see the second cluster from the front rather than the top.

I have absolutely no experience with kuehneromyces but the lack of a ring or ring zone and brittleness of the fruit bodies are the only reasons I think otherwise.
