Correcting misconceptions about "light"….
    #19154223 - 11/18/13 01:44 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

As I'm growing (pun intended) in my shroom world experiences, I come across the need to light the little ones. So of course I turn to the forum once again and found that there's a lot of talk about 6500k……

So I just want to throw in my photographic / lighting knowledge as a way to help you decide on your light usage.

All light is not created equal, and K degrees most definitely doesn't say anything about the quality of the light.

Naturally you can imagine that daylight as we know it is the best source. It ranges from around 3000K to almost 10000K in most extreme cases. But looking past K degrees of daylight, what makes it optimal is natural daylights ability to include all wavelengths of the colour spectrum… pretty much every colour in the rainbow.

When choosing conditions we want to simulate as close to natural conditions as possible, since that is how nature created the little ones in the first place.

We can start with K degrees. I couldn't help wondering about why 6500K is so popular, since  daylight often is around 5600K. 6500K is a little more bluish, like lightly cloudy day, but again, since K isn't the only factor, I think we can look past that and use either two.

But what sets apart good lights from bad lights is the color spectrum they use.

In the world of video, you can easily tell a cheap 5600/6500K light apart from an expensive one, simply by viewing the side by side on a monitor. The color rendition of the cheap light will be lacking. Either have a nasty bluish tint or a green one.
And I think that might be even more important that just focusing on the K value.

The color spectrum in a cheap CFL will have a very spiky spectrum where the expensive one will have a more even spectrum. When looking at a chart this is obvious.

But the funny thing is that tungsten lights actually have the best color rendition of all un-natural lights available. It's very even across the board, but tends to lean a bit more towards the red end of the spectrum. But when looking a tungsten chart compared to a CFL or fluorescent chart, the spectrum looks far better and covers more waves.

If you take a color filter like CTB and put in front of a tungsten lamp, it will produce a spectrum that is relatively close to natural 5600K daylight, or as close as you can get with cheap fixtures.

It's cool that you have success with what ever light you are using, but I know there's a lot of you who likes tingling around with your setup and trying different things out, so maybe this would be interesting for you to try out.

Any old tungsten will do… and the CTB can be bought as sheets at most photographic or film accessories suppliers.
