MEA agar 2 rich? Using old Doc_T recipe... Thinking it needs revision...

When I started playing with agar I found a no-pour tek by Doc_T that caught my eye and has been working rlly well so far for everything EXCEPT spore germination. The mixture he calls for in this tread is (6g of malt and 5g of agar to 340mL water) making about 15 jars. I've had no issues with clones, grains, or any other misc colonized media growing right onto it and doing its thing but every time I've attempted spores its a no go.
Link to thread used for above recipe http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/16590981#16590981
Based of an on going thread by Frank H, whom i know to be a very active and trust worthy member I see that his recipe calls for (10g malt, 10g agar, and 500mL water) which give or take would make 20 plates at 25mL a piece.
I'm ready to see some spore germination on agar and as a test run Im going to just half that for 10 plates and go (5g malt, 5g agar, 250mL water) to see if I get any results from that...
Based of the opinion of someone who has had success getting spores to germinate on agar without any issues would you say that Doc_T's recipe is a bit 2 nutricious for what I'm attempting even though mycelium apparently has no issues growing out onto it?

IMO that recipe is going to produce some really stiff agar. For germination I like to have my agar a little on the softer side to help hydrate the spores.

Doc_T's or Franks?
Would you like to recommend your particular mixture used for spores?

The doc t recipe is too stiff IMO. Use Franks should be a bit softer. I would even add a little less agar just to have a nice soft agar which works better for spore germination IME.

Regarding nutrition, 2-2.5% sugar and starch by weight is the ideal range. Myc will happily chew on anything from 0.5% to about 4%, but at a slower rate.
And I would echo those above: Make a softer agar (just reduce the agar per unit of water) to help the spores hydrate faster.

I've been using a 1:2 ratio with my ME/agar, and it seems to work great for me. Done a few batches now and multiple dishes, haven't had issues with any of them.

Did you have any luck getting germination? I am also having the same problems as you and I a, looking for a tailored MEA recipe.

lab standard MEA: 20g agar/20g LME / 1L water
stubborn spore germination MEA: 18g agar / 20g LME / 1L water. If they wont germinate on that they are dead.

Hey thanks man. The stubborn MEA recipe worked but what really worked the best was the grocery store agar tek with honey potato flakes and agar agar. The problem I was having was caused by using pre prepared PDA mix with no experience to know why after 15days I got nothing. So anyone reading this a decade later try different recipes and don’t give up.
I have had a lot of fun starting with agar:
