Yellow/Brownish spots in side BRF jars
    #19151263 - 11/17/13 06:54 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

First off, I just wanted to say that this my close friends 2nd grow, and it all would not have been possible without the Shroomery and Mr. Rabbit. He started off simply and this go around I've been experimenting and trying to further his knowledge in this field that entices him so much now.
My friend and I have been trying to maintain temperatures and other aspect with ever increasing results. However the one issue that has come about is a brownish yellow streak that ran through one of the jars. It started off as a small brownish spot that look moist so we figured maybe just dry verm from the top layer that got somehow moist.
However, the spot continued to "run" down the jar in a crooked line bordering the mycelium in the jar. Now the myc is taking over the most of the brown "line" in the middle of the jar, the bottom of the jar is much darker, but the myc seems to be taking everything over. I've only experienced green mold on an old cake & in 1 out of over 30 jars, so this is the extent of my experience with contamination. I would like to know what this is if possible, and if it is actually contamination. BTW, I have researched this site for days before posting and could NOT find any pics that fit my situation. Please be kind, I need information.http://

likely a bacterial contam, try wide mouth half pints, with pints gravity draws moisture to the bottom and also compacts your sub making it hard for mycelium to colonize it

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

I'm tired do me a favor

Thank you. Needed that bit of info. My friend tried pint jars (experimenting), with the thought -"more substrate, more fruits". There are actually quite a few Hawaiian and Ecuadors that appear they are going to make it with no problem. Will go back to the tried and true method as well, but this hobby just screams for innovation.

Get the Kerr brand ones that are as wide as they are tall.
