What headphones do you wear?

I need new ones for gym, I'm using in-ears ATM and they work well.
I prefer closed-off phones but don't want it to be hot or heavy to wear
I have Audio-Technica I use at home so I would consider them first.

Audio Technica ATH-M50s

Those are the coiled cable ones, but same idea. I wish I had those instead of straight cable.
Need to get a pair of IEMs. Won't be for a while though, have plenty of other financial priorities at the moment.

Over the holidays I may pick up some Sennheiser "Momentum" headphones. They came out with a new "over the ear" model.
I also wear earbuds for working out/activities, and would be open to suggestions. I'm looking for a pair with a the small "fin" to hold them in your ear (like the bose). I almost bought the Jaybird work out earphones, but they're entirely blue tooth, and I didn't want that.
I know Bose has a pretty horrible reputation in home audio, does that extend to mobile gear as well?

For working out and just generally being out of the house you want IEMs. I have Shure SE215s that have been great for me. They're about 3 years old and still going strong. They're $100.

For around the house and just relaxing I use some Sennheiser HD 280 pro's I have had for years now, They sound amazing and give all the quality I could ask for.
And for mobile on the go phones I use a set of Bluetooth LG HBS-700 around the neck phones. The battery lasts all of 8 hours and you can control the music and volume from the neck unit. I absolutely love these and would buy another tomorrow if they broke. I will never go back to cords when i am moving around again.

Skullcandies. Both IEM's and cans. Why? Cheap. Easily available. Sounds quality is not too horrific, especially of the IEM's I picked up. I use them for lossy audio streams and files anyway, so sound quality is obviously not the primary criterion here.

Their build quality is also shit though. The IEMs are around $30 I'm guessing? My $100 Shures will outlast them 5-1, have replaceable cables, sound A LOT better, and are more comfortable.

Which Shure's do you have? Are you able to compare them to high end cans? I've never owned high end IEM's, only cans. But have been considering them due to portability.

Build quality hasn't been an issue so far. The cans I've had for about a year now, the IEMs I've bought only recently. Maybe they'll last only 6 months. For €25, that would even be almost acceptable. If they last a full year, I'll be happy. Btw, I'm pretty glad with the way they block noise, I hadn't expected that.

Shure SE215. They're pretty cheap ($100).
They do not have the same bass extension as my ATH-M50s, nor do they have as big of a soundstage. They do sound pretty damned good though - I could never lug around cans when I'm out of the house, it's a GIANT pain in the ass. I tried it a couple of times and said fuck that. I went with relatively cheap IEMs since I take them everywhere so that I don't have to be super careful with them. If they break it's not the end of the world.
I have listened to Westone W4s before (http://www.amazon.com/Westone-4-W4/dp/B004M4RTUY) and although they still did not match the M50s in terms of bass extension they do have incredible detail and had a similar soundstage. Cans do sound better, but I don't think it's worth the compromise of having to carry them around.

Yeah, a good pair of IEMs completely block out noise. That's one of the great things of having them on the go. Like I said though, my SE215s are 4 years old with no signs of slowing down. At less than 3 times the price of those Skullcandys I bet they will last more than 3 times longer and be better the entire time (sound quality + comfort).

Thanks for the info. I used to lug all my cans around with a portable amp to boot. But I was in school then and always had a bag to store them. Nowadays I want something to stick in my pocket.
How are they for noise blocking and how is the comfort wearing them for extended periods?
And did you get yours in canada or stateside?

Maybe. Or maybe not. Too much depends on how they're used and if you happen to be lucky with the pair you got. You lucked out with your Shures. I may luck out with the Skullcandies - or I may not. Who's to say? In any case, I shure as hell wasn't prepared to pay $100 for a pair of IEMs I needed for a one-week vacation, with every other day of additional use I got out of them considered a bonus.

Noise blocking: 8/10
Comfort: 9/10 - the only more comfortable listening device I've put on my head are Beyer headphones. I can wear them easily for 3-4 hours with no discomfort.
I bought them online from the states, these guys specifically. http://www.earphonesolutions.com/

Ah, well if that was your use case it certainly makes sense. I bought my IEMs with the intent of keeping them for years and using them on an almost daily basis. $100 to me was pretty cheap for what I have gotten out of them. If I spent more I would be scared to put them in my pocket which would remove a lot of the convenience factor for me.
Most of the time I will just wrap them up and throw them in my pocket without a case and I haven't had any issues yet. I wouldn't do that with $200+ IEMs though, they would always go in the case.

I'm rocking the Denon AH-D2000 with a nice DAC and amp combo at home. I'm rocking the V-MODA M-80 for portable use. Very happy with both of them. I have some Monster Turbine Golds that sound GREAT but I can never get them to stay in my ears so they just collect dust. And they can get funny when they do stay in the ears because they're a dynamic driver with no vent so when you put them in your ear it can create a positive pressure against the drivers and makes them go funny so you gotta tap them until it goes back to normal. Annoying! Not so happy with my Monsters. But I can't complain the retail on them was over $300 at the time and I got them for less than $50 brand new in box.

Oh yeah, for daily use, I would have paid $100 too. Although I probably would have gone for cans in that case. Somehow, I just generally like cans better. Although IEM's are really good these days, I have to admit.

You would wear cans at the gym or on the bus? Personally I find them a HUGE pain to take out of the house. I have ATH-M50 cans for home use, but I always leave the house with my SE-215 IEMs.

You mean the gimble assembly? It's a known weak spot on the Dx000 line. I'm EXTREMELY gentle with mine and I snagged two pairs of the entire gimble assembly from Denon for use in the future and worst case I'm sure to whomever I sell them next will be more than happy to have all the replacement parts come with it already. The phones are outta production so it might be wise to snag an extra assembly just in case... Here's a parts diagram you can email Denon about them. The parts you need are outlined in blue.

DAC I'm running it through my Denon home theater receiver via digital coax from my PC. It's a Burr-Brown 24/192. The amp I've got is an Objective2 running from my receiver RCA pre-outs.

I'm using MEElectronics A151 Balanced Armature In-Ear Headphone, payed $30

I use them for when I'm out of the house.
Audio Technica ATH-A700 are my home pair
My problem with my in-ear headphones is you need to be careful not to lose the rubber ear-bud when you are taking them on and off, and as I exercise with them on sometimes they come a little loose.
It's no big deal for now. I would much prefer a set of headphones that are light to wear that I can move around in.

Buy foam tips. They're more comfortable, you get a better seal, and they NEVER fall off.

Downside: You gotta replace them with use and they don't handle sweat well requiring more frequent replacement for gym use, and they can soften the sound.

That is exactly the pieces I need! where did you find that diagram, can you please link me?
Sounds like you have a nice little set up going. I'm running an x-fi extreme music as my source, highly modified, all caps replaced with polymers, opamps have been replaced, as well as the timing crystal replaced with a more precise one. the DAC though isnt as good as BB's 24/192. But the opamp and cap mods have really maxed out the cirrus logic DAC chip. into a PPAv2 amp I built.
Ever think of modding your gear? Swapping opamps is real easy to change sound signatures. Plus you can get a lot of various opamps for free from analog devices, texas instruments, etc through their sample program.

IMO they have better bass (probably due to the better seal) and you don't lose any sound quality in the rest of the range.
They do degrade over time, but not that quickly. It's about $2 a set and they easily last 2 months of hard use, more if you don't use them too much. I replace mine every 4-6 months or so.

I use cheap in-ear headphones.
The best cheap pair I ever got were like $0.86 on eBay, they actually had pretty decent sound quality and got pretty loud, they were way better than a $20-$30 pair of in-ear headphones you can get at like Best Buy or Walmart.

That's because Best Buy and Walmart sell ear buds that SHOULD be $1 for $30. Buy online.

I saved that file from somewhere on Head-Fi a while back for situations just like this But it was a year or so ago I couldn't possibly remember which thread I got it from but it's legit. It's how I got my spare assemblies. I'm super super gentle to my Denons though so I don't foresee me needing them but I figure it adds value for the next owner if ever I go to sell them.
I'd like to eventually get a self contained DAC instead of running through my receiver but getting anything 24/192 with multiple types of input is $$$ right now so I'll wait a bit. I haven't modded anything before. My first mod, is I want to replace the cable with a D5k or D7k cable but I don't know how to solder and I am scared of ruining the drivers so that's pretty much on hold indefinitely. I did put some foam spacers between the ear pads and the cups to help with sound stage and a bit of the bass bloat they have. I'm not even sure it did much but it felt better saying I modded my 'phones.

I heard great things about the olives, always meant to try them in my Monster IEMs but never got around to it since I highly prefer my M-80s for portable use. They're better in every single way anway. Glad they work for you.

I had the opportunity to pickup Audio Technica ATH-ES55 at a discount today. ($60aud)
I considered buying them
The earphone size isn't big enough for me, I'll need something to cover (closed-ear)

i grew up as a raver kid and played around with dj'ing in my 20's. i picked up a little knowledge about sound equipment along the way. i just replaced my headphones and am on my second pair of these.
great sound quality, best price you'll get for professional grade headphones. my last pair lasted me 13 years (and they're still okay - i keep them in my closet as my backup pair).

You want cans for exercising? That's a horrible idea. Get IEMs.

I've got me some Denon AH-D2000s as well. I modded them with J Money lambskin-covered foam cups. I run them with an Objective2 headphone amp. I think they sound pretty damn good (very neutral sounding).

My daily buds are Skullcandy Ink'd. Cheap, replaceable, and have awesome bass. I've got Shure E2c, Skullcandy cans, Studio Dre. Beats, and Grado SR-60i for home use. I bring my Skullcandy cans and Beats out once and awhile.

Those are the coiled cable ones, but same idea. I wish I had those instead of straight cable.
Need to get a pair of IEMs. Won't be for a while though, have plenty of other financial priorities at the moment.
i have the m50s also. Best you can get for the price by far. Ihave the coiled they are a pain in the ass because the coil is springy obviously and pulls your head. Wish i had just a regular cable.on mine. Wish they made a braided one.

Yeah haha they should have made a coiled one and then made a non coiled that was like 6 feet or something. White looks pretty nice but they get dirt fast.
