how to avoid cob web
    #19151861 - 11/17/13 09:13 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

alright, so ive been having cob web problems for a while now. i've always just checked pretty frequently because i've come to expect it and just blast it with some hydrogen peroxide.  just a background on my set up i'm using WBS spawned to coir/verm mix in a SGFC. i'm preparing that by putting in a coir brick and verm and dumping boiling water on it per Damion5050's tek. then i wrap it up in a garbage bag and put it in a closet to let the myc do its thing. this is when im getting the cob web. (in the 10-20 days before i introduce fruiting conditions) what am i doing wrong? should i not put a bag over it? cover up some holes?

I'd try proper pasteurization

They're turning out fine in the end? It could just be mushroom mycelium. It can look a little cobweby at times especially when it's first poking out the substrate. Mushroom mycelium reacts to peroxide too so that doesn't necessarily mean it's cobweb.

If you click and zoom in you'll see the cobweb in this picture. It's finger like and quite different than mycelium. It might not be so easy to see at forum resolution though.

It's the wispy stuff between the bright white, Jumping from grain to grain,

I do believe it will sporulate black tiny dots if left alone long enough. Don't quote me on that though.

Cobweb has white spores. Pins molds like Mucor and Rhizopus form black pins. They also have white to grey mycelium similar to what's in that jar.

If you mean in terms of what perxide can kill probably not. It's only the reason bother trying to correct people on it, peroxide is only effect on dactylium/cladabotryum spp. I'd like someone get a tub like that cure it peroxide, I'll eat my words.

I have a feeling the lexicon of the shroomery and amateur cultivation alike refers to cobweb as a multiplicity of off white to grey molds that often effect cubensis grows. Not that that's a good thing, but it seems like it's not going away.

I'm starting to realize that. It's just it leaves you with conflicting information that cobweb can easily treated while watching people vainly try to save their grows from a mold that's not going to go away.

why dont you try adding something useful next time you decide to post? maybe what i could/should try instead of damion's tek

no im pretty sure its cob web. its looks grey and fluffy. kind of reminds me of the dudes hair from the end of indiana jones and the last crusade. haha

also, that pic is from an old grow just to get an idea of the set up i'm using. i dont think that one was affected with cob web. i just notice a loooot of water forming on the lid and dropping onto the substrate/myc that has poked through which makes me think the humidity is too high and the garbage bag is just creating stagnant air so i tried adding less water the next time and it seemed like the thing dried out quicker than normal

ok well let me say congrats on turning your sgfc into a makeshift mono, it seems to have worked out but y tape the bag t the side of the tub? that defeats its purpose?

Well, tub looks fine to me. So whatever the problem I'd say you got it handled. Unless there's something you didn't mention. It's not growing over your mushrooms in later flushes or taking over the substrate or anything?

think that was the one i put perlite in the bottom of and used the cheap metal trays to hold the spawn (so it has holes in the bottom of the FC.) then i had a problem with the myc eating through the trays so i just tried something new and put the bag down and dumped the spawn/ substrate in and tried that out.

i occasionally mist. the humidity from the substrate (i make it deep) seems to be enough to last for about 3 flushes and then it slows down to the point that its not worth it to keep. i toss it behind our barn and check it every now and then and pick the ones that still manage to sprout up

what does that involve then? because i was under the impression that damion's tek was pasteurization albeit an easier/quicker/economical way.

If you are using coir and verm (with gypsum or without) and you are seeing molds, the cause is most likely in your spawn.

RR has said it before and I will echo it because of my experience: I've never seen coir/verm contam without being spawned to, either with proper pasteurization or the bucket tek.

Check your sterile procedures with your cultures and spawn. Start on agar to ensure clean cultures.
