how to grow yeast

I've found a few links but I need to start from the ground up.
What is starter?
And what are some links that can really help? I know how to use agar well and I read on here I can get a regular beer and get a culture from that. And do I add that to the starter?

Peel an apple...(ecological ect..)
Put the peels in water for a coupple of days.. (not much water)
Mix the water with some flour..
Let it sit for some days..
?....
You will probably smell if there is yeast or not..
If there is no yeast this is because another fungi has overtaken the bulb of whatever one might want to call it..
Yeast dies of if there is contamination, so there is no need to be afraid there will be mold ect.. as the yeast will have died longs agoes..
-------------------- And thus begins the reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.

Any directions more detailed?
And it needs to be dry at the end result. Its for moonshine.

Why not just buy yeast specifically for distilling? If you are making moonshine you do not want beer yeast. It is not as tolerant too higher levels of alcohol

We figured we'd just use bakers yeast.

You should use a yeast specifically designed for higer alcohol content, that way when you are ready to distill you will have more alcohol to begin with.
Did you build a distiller already

They sell specialty yeast that is made for distilling. If you really want a good consistent product that would be your best bet. Then once you guys have done a few batches with the professional yeast and get the feel for it, then I would recommend playing around with wild yeasts

I've actually wanted to get into culture expansion and storage of yeast. Anyone have any idea on how to store yeast on slants? I know yeast is a little different from fungi mycelium and doesn't tend to shove its way into things, but their cells are so small being prokaryotes that they tend to get everywhere anyway...
I'm big into Brewing, so I need to figure a way to store them and keep them viable.

Sorry yeast is a eukaryote, it's just one of the smallest eukaryotic cells. My bad.

You will end up with a pretty nasty lactic acid culture this way.

If you want to get a natural strain of yeast, I recommend getting the skins from organic fruits that haven't washed recently. To get the culture larger just put the skins inside sugar water with ginger and make a "Ginger Bug" I believe it's called.

Culturing wild yeasts is a tricky thing. Usually you end up with loctobacillus and you get lactic fermentation instead. This can be a good thing if you're brewing a sour ale.

I really like this outlook! Anways, lactobacillus is a really useful genus and is very useful in Kombucha making. It creates that acidic flavor that Kombucha possesses.
If you could get a brewer's yeast strain, then you could possibly create some very nice mead or wine. Mead is a lot easier than wine and I find that I like the taste more. I have found stuff on the net regarding using bread yeast, which could theoretically work as it is the same species found in wine and beer making (S. cerevisiae). Probably the content of the good stuff (Alky-hall) would be lower, but it's worth trying.

Lactobacillus isn't a species but a genus and it's really bad if you're trying to make moonshine. Sure, lactofermentation is used in a wide range of foodstuffs, from kombucha to kimchi to plain old yoghurt and sourdough bread, but you can't just say it's 'good'. It really depends on what you're doing.

I bake bread daily. I've often thought of just sprinkling some of my store bought baker's yeast onto some agar and seeing if it'll grow.
Has anybody ever tried this?
For moonshine, you'd be better off buying a sachet of turbo yeast.

I'm a huge (wild) fermentation junkie.
Making a starter is pretty easy, just give it some time. You can use anything. I usually use juice. Throwing a fruit peel in there will speed things up. You will probably get some aerobic mold growing on the surface during this process but it's harmless. It most definitely wont be a pure culture. Once you have a starter going, pitch it, brew it, and reserve some of the brew to make a new starter with or pitch directly into your next batch. You can also use the sediment which you'd be tossing anyways. Jar it and store it in the fridge if you don't want to use right away.
Also, it's mostly acetic acid making kombucha sour which is made by acetobacter and I guess brettanomyces as well. Sure there's some lactic acid in there too. (So the mother is definitely a product of the acetobacter and this process is aerobic. I think Brettanomyces is anaerobic and it's used in lambics. Anyways, if you're making kombucha at home, you probably don't care too much about selecting strains so it all gets in there)
