I have the same thing in my house.  It was built in the early 50's. Not sure what it's for.  I'm thinking maybe an old window AC unit.  Interestingly though, a couchsurfing girl from Germany stayed at my house and her phone charger fit it perfectly.

That's weird. German plugs have round pins, how did they fit those rectangle holes so perfectly?

They are 240vac receptacles typically used for air-conditioners.
