Interesting Fungus Growing on Eucalyptus in San Diego
    #19148111 - 11/17/13 01:00 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

A large custard colored clumpy fungus growing out of the base of an old eucalyptus tree in the city of San Diego.

Not quite sure what it could be. Impressive none the less.

Any ideas?

I wouldn't eat it if it was growing on Eucalyptus, though.

Why not?  Does eucalyptus produce something you do not want to consume?

Always looking for interesting active prints (especially Gymnopilus spp. and sclerotia producers) and cacti and poppy seeds.

Yes, what's wrong with fungi growing on Eucalyptus?

I have eaten the COTW from cedar and had no ill effects.
I would be willing to have a go at this too.

Wow, I never would have guessed a Laetiporus because I would expect to see some "shelves" or gills or some other distinguishing feature, but double checking on mushroomobserver, they do often appear to be amorphous like this.

Is this specimen in a particular stage of development? If I had to guess, I would say this isn't a mature specimen, but perhaps I'm wrong.

You will never see gills on Laetiporus.

Yuo sure it's not confusion with something like Omphalotus nidiformis?

Of course not. I was actually thinking of something different in my head when I wrote gills--It is just surprising to me that you guys can look at an amorphous blob of fungi and ID it, especially when photographs of the same species can look wildly varied in form.

Is this specimen in a particular stage of development though? I would be tempted to try it, but I wouldn't want to harvest it prematurely (or perhaps now is the prime time to harvest).

It is usually best to consume chickens young. But while Ganzig might be willing to eat this, I personally wouldn't. I have tried Hericium off Eucalyptus and it did make me sick.

The reason I can ID it so easily is because I see TONS of chickens on Eucalyptus in California this time of year.

I've seen several references in field guides and online regarding not consuming edibles growing on Eucalyptus, is this a falsity?

If eaten; the leaves make most animals sick, sans the Koala... But Maybe there's something I don't know...

Eucalyptus grown fungi wont make you sick. Not cooking the mushrooms all the way might.

People often get this into their head that they make things toxic... then get psychosomatic symptoms.

Um no, it can make you sick and it has happened to me. I'm telling you, I have eaten Hericium off a variety of substrates and Eucalyptus was the only one that disagreed with me. Even the fumes smelled bad while I cooked it.
