anti fungal Q
    #19029194 - 10/25/13 12:32 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

im getting ready to grow some cactus seeds(trichocereus i think) and was wondering if i could add some reishi powder(or other mushroom) to the soil mix instead of a anti fungi chemical? maybe just sprinkle some on the top to protect the seedling?

Anti-whatever-chemicals in your seed pots can be more detrimental than beneficial. Zapping moist soil in a microwave oven or baking it dry will kill most pathogens, soaking the pots themselves in a bleach solution overnight will take care of the rest. That's what I do, anyway.

Besides, not all fungi are pathogens. Check these photos of a Frailea horstii sowing I did back in 2010:

Two weeks separate these two photos. That mould was feeding on the seed husks or anything that leached from the seeds and left any seedling strong enough unhurt.

Good

btw, I have never used any anti-fungal to seedling trays. I keep tray in microwave, then sow seeds at top of warm soil, spray some water and open tray every day and so on. Also I make holes to bag/dome very early stage to increase air flow but keep some humidity still for seedlings.

Depends on plant but I remove whole dome or bag away after 3-6months. Sometimes I use plastic dome/bag with holes to older seedlings cause it captures the heat and keep young plants in warm. Lophophora seems like to keep them under good airflow dome long time and when it's dry period, there is not much of humidity from moist soil, only heat during the day.

Watering will increase humidity for day or two always when I use dome but seems seedlings what are very thirsty likes some temporary increase of humidity after watering. I think I use my mini-greenhouse with dome over year for peyote to capture warm air during the day but not anymore as purpose of trying to increase humidity for them.

I agree with intelligentlife above about fresh air being important. You just need to be careful with the balance of fresh air and humidity. Small incremental steps are the key.
