Oysters, straw and small rounds?
    #19147806 - 11/16/13 11:26 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I have been doing a lot of research to try and learn enough to not sound ignorant. Now that I have enough information to just be a little dangerous, to myself at least, I have to ask a question. Thought I would try to make an attempt at an educated question/suggestion for my first post. I did try to find if someone had posted this before but was unable to find anything.

If a person wants to extend and improve production of oyster mushrooms indoors why couldn't a person add a couple dozen or so small rounds cut from a hardwood tree branch, pasteurized of course. Couldn't this add a substantial amount of nutrients and extend the lifespan of an indoor culture and possible give larger caps and maybe yields?

I think the benefits of straw are that it's quick and easy.  If you toss some wood rounds in there it'll take longer.

I use sawdust as a substrate and so far the only difference I can tell on the bags that have woodchips added is that the third flush seems better.

When using straw I don't even know if that would be worth it.

That makes sense, One thing I didn't even consider was that the fruiting could take longer because the rounds would take longer to become colonized. Might be something I have to experiment with when I finally get started.
