This isn't from myself, posting this for somebody who asked me to:

Habitat: Piney woods area of Texas, on a university campus, with oak trees nearby.

Gills: No gills (see picture)


Stem: Very thick and short (see picture)

Cap: See picture. Mushroom was roughly one foot in diameter.

Bruising: none observed

I'm looking at the picture, and even tough it's very overexposed, the gills are clearly visible? Aren't they? Looks like an Armillaria species.

Armillaria tabescens, or honey mushrooms. They're a pretty good edible. Wait for a TI to chime in before you consume, though.
