golden pholiota? (pholiota aurivella) and an ID request
    #19145038 - 11/16/13 12:04 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

When I saw these from about 50 feet away, I was hoping for gyms. No such luck.

Let me know what you guys think it is.  If it is indeed the golden pholiota, I've read that they are edible. If this is the case, have any of you tried them? What would be a good method for prepping them?

Also, I'd like to have these ID'd

Don't hold me to that and please don't make any decisions on consumption because of anything I have to say  just throwing it out there to compare, cool finds tho

Nah I've not seen a Lepista species like that. It just seems to have the characteristics of one.

They are Pholiota aurivella.  That being said, the only thing I know about their edibility is that its contested.

Sure does!  It's so pale though I don't think its L. nuda.  Even washed out ones tend to show some signs of purple.  I wonder if its something cool like Lepista irina?

Thanks Lhun! That was my instinctive first thought after referring to my field guides. One book says that it is a good edible- but use caution. The other book says that they should be avoided. Some people have had gastric upset after consumption. That same book says that the texture and taste resemble marshmallows with out sugar.

Pass. Lol

I think that might be it. I REALLY need a microscope. I am going to order one.

Any good suggestions? I want to be able to use it for anything needed for IDing and I'd like to be able to take pictures of spores to post for IDing. If I'm going to make the purchase, id rather spend more and get something good than a cheap piece of junk that will have to be replaced soon.

Since you are new to microscopy you should get the cheap scopes, and if you end up liking them in a few years you can get something nice.

An Amscope B-100ms does everything you need for $200, also you need some immersion oil type A and a reticle and camera.

How does this look for the reticle?

Do you have a camera recommendation?

One final additional id request.

Puff ball: what type? Is it edible? I hear that the white centers mean edible.

Hydnum repandum? *Dentinum repandum*

Looks good, but if you are going to use a camera then you need a stage micrometer, not a reticle.

I suggest a Canon 60d with an adapter from microscopenet.com and the wired remote shutter release.  Not the cheapest microscope camera but you deserve some badass gear for putting up with your hilarious wife.

The puffball looks like a Handkea.

Your Hydnum looks like H. umbilicatum.

Which stage micrometer do you recommend?
They are ludicrously expensive for what you are getting...

Would this stage micrometer do the trick?

Thanks for the advice, Alan! I'll look into the camera today too.

Actually, this is were a microscope won't help too much, smell and general location (State? Country?) would help more.  I find C. brunneocephala here, its usually more brown on the cap ime.

I'm in the south east US. Lower Appalachian area.

They actually are a little more Brown in person than in the pics. The pics gave them a pink-Brown hue. It is relatively close, but in the pics the brown doesn't show as well as the pink.

I don't think its C. brunneocephala then which is a species known only from California as far as I'm aware.  There are other species in that group it could be, I'm not really sure which one though.

Are there any toxic mushrooms in that group? I haven't eaten any of my findings, but I sure would like to- only if it is safe. I will likely go collect a few more hydnum and try those today. I read that they resemble chants in flavor and texture.  That's a good thing. I've been craving some chants, but the season is done.

What do they smell like?  I'm not sure there are any poisonous species in the blewit group, but I don't have any experience in your area either.

Hmm.  Maybe nutty? Maybe fruity/sweet smelling. Mixed with mushroom smell. Not foul smelling at all, but I can't pin point the smell. It smells good, imo.

I've smelled some mushrooms before that are NASTY. I wouldn't put this smell anywhere near them.

There are some on ebay for $13 plus shipping, they come from China though so it will probably take a week to arrive.

Usually they cost around $30.  Perhaps it is easy to make these micrometer slides cheaply but I have not yet found a way.

Ravioli with mushroom cream sauce is in the works.

If it is good, I'll can some and save for a later date
