It has absolutely nothing to do with it being 2013 and having an internet connection or not, I should hope everyone posting here has access to the internet.
It has everything to do with being a game that is a CLASSIC SINGLE PLAYER / save/load type of sandbox, being ~online ONLY~ is just fucking retarded. Its the type of game you may want to play on your laptop on the plane, or on a road trip, or anywhere you may be. It's the type of game that DOES NOT REQUIRE internet so why make it MANDATORY? Why should I be unable to log into my single player game because servers are full? If ANYTHING online should just be an OPTION for sim city. The only reason EA did it was to "stop piracy" but in doing so they also single-handedly shot themselves in the foot and absolutely killed any chance for a modding community. They are just being greedy fuckbags
It's like making Minesweeper online only and you must have a Windows Live account to play it. Fucking Retarded.
Anyway apparently now even though EA said it was impossible to do offline, someone figure out you can mod the files and force it to work offline http://www.cinemablend.com/games/SimCity-Offline-Mode-Now-Available-General-Public-53739.html
Only catch is you can't save anything.
Anyway, this is fucking 2013, we have the technology. Sim City should be available to play offline right out the gate. You should be able to install it from the disc, and play it forever on your laptop in the middle of bum fuck egypt that hasn't even heard the term internet. If online is an optional thing, whatever, everyone can build their fairy buttpirate metropolis with their COD buddies, but offline should be hardcoded into the fucking game, it's not a multiplayer game period. Any "multiplayer" aspect of Sim City is just a stupid afterthought.
I can play Sim City 2000 and Sim City 4 offline. Save games, load games. I can play them wherever. I can play them when my internet goes down. Sim City is a classic Single player game. I love them so much. However I haven't seen much to stand behind on this new one

I pretty much knew this would happen eventually...
I remember when sims 3 came out... supposedly 'the most un-piratable game ever'.. became.. 'the most pirated game ever in history'
very shortly after it came out, lol... it was an epic EA fail moment... I bet/hope simcity 5 ends up like this too

I kinda like the new simcity. Except for the fact that I can't save and I constantly lose my cities...
I like the difference, it isn't as easy as simcity 4 where you could just borrow all you can from the start, plot a massive city then collect a million dollars and build the rest in less than an hour.
I've noticed that I always have a problem within my city (either fire or police or school or whatever) and I am always strapped for cash. That's kinda good cause in SC4, money wasn't even an issue, like I said, in an hour I had a million in bank and like 100000 citizens.
I like that you can upgrade your buildings. Its the most improved aspect of the game. Remember SC4? By the end of the game you needed entire neighborhoods of hospitals and schools which used to take a lot of space in you city. I always hated having to bulldoze a skyscraper to build a new school...
Anyways, I could complain, but I enjoy the difference and I still haven't mastered the ressource trading and mining aspect. I still don't know what happens to my resources and freight lol.

ever try to tie in multiple cities in a region together?
in the original, 2000, and 3000 I could do it like that... 4 is really the only version where I COULDN'T just take out a loan and make a metropolis happen within an hour or 2... I guess if you're only talkin one square of your region it's somewhat easy

ever use the mods?... not hard to find the 'urban school mod'... or 'central hospital' mod, etc...
honestly man, the mods for 4 make it a lot more playable/realistic/fun... they're also 100% FREE
if you're playin vanilla simcity 4, you are really missing out on what it actually has to offer these days, just trust me on this...

I hope you people playing realize how broken most of what you're doing is. The new sim city is essentially a super expensive always need to be online Chia Pet. RCI is completely broken, path finding is horrid, traffic is STILL broken, their super awesome "glass box" engine was a complete lie. Sims don't have their own individual lives at all in the city, the cars literally drive to the nearest empty house and live there for the day and then go to a new house the next day. The worst part is a lot of these issues are "working as intended" for Maxis or they just straight up refuse to talk about them. This will probably go down as one of the worst launches on gaming history, they essentially have us an alpha version of the game.
