Any experiences with Japan?

I am going to Japan for 18 days, most of the trip is school related but a friend and I extended the flight back so we have 7 days to do as we please. Any advice on where to go in the Tokyo area?
We will probably be couch surfing and/or staying at Hostels. I have never been over seas so any advice at all is appreciated!

If you get a chance, ride the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Tokyo up to Sendai or Morioka and see some of the more northern areas for a day or two. Go to Mt. Fuji. See some of the museums that have stuff from the Samurai era. Definitely get into the night life. If you are into jazz they have some HOT jazz clubs.
Be nice and try to hook up with a Japanese girl. She'll show you a lot that you wouldn't have found on your own.

I heard Japanese people have a love/hate relationship with white people. Like they secretly admire the hell out of white people (which is why japanese cartoon characters are animated with big eyes and hair like like white people) but publicly they act like they are superior. In any case I heard they are very race-conscious, which is the opposite of what I'm used to where I live, so I would be interested in experiencing it. Let me know your experience with this phenomenon when you return.

This x1000 Respect is fucking huge in Japan. Don't be a "gaijin" - which basically means arrogant white asshole or outsider. aka don't act like the typical douchebag cocky American. Respect their customs and way of life.

I stayed in Yokohama with a host family for 3 weeks back when I was in highschool. It was awesome!
We only went to Tokyo for a day so I don't have a lot to tell you about it. Tokyo Disneyland was pretty fun. Check it out! You'll when you see Japanese guys dressed as Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.
-Do your best to learn some simple Japanese phrases. They love it when foreigners make a genuine effort to speak their language.
-Be polite as possible!
-Take your shoes off when entering a home is a must! Aligning them with the "toes" facing the outside of the home is extra respectful, and will get you bonus points.
-Grab a copy of "The Japan Times". English newspaper there, it's extremely liberal but interesting insight into a Japanese perspective of world affairs.
-Go to Karaoke bars! It's so much fun.
-Public transit is a must. It helps to at least familiarize yourself a little bit with the train system. Obtaining an English copy of the train schedule beforehand will help you a lot.
A lot more stuff I can say about it. Have fun man!

Yeah OP - at the very least try to learn some basic Japanese before you go. If you'll mostly be in Tokyo.. it's not as big of a deal.. as Tokyo is very multicultural and a lot of people speak English But don't go there thinking everyone or even most people speak English - they don't. Everyone speaks Japanese and everything is written in Japanese. Learning some basic phrases and learning how to understand some will go a long way, and they will respect you more for trying to learn their language.
As for places to go, if you like games/electronics, definitely don't miss the Akihabara district. Shinjuku has a lot of the nightlife... and Shibuya is where a lot of the shops/ young people / fashion is.

We rented bicycles and spent a lot of time exploring the area. Also played a lot of airsoft in the woods. My buddy got stung by a "bear bee" (Asian giant hornet). You should've seen his face when the Japanese grandmother sucked the poison out of him. I still laugh about that to this day.

Fluke parasites. I don't think you would want to get them. They can be hard to eradicate and they can live throughout your body in your liver and intestines, etc.. People can get infected with them through food like raw fish. http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/gnathostoma/faqs.html ;

Shit. I thought you were gonna say because of all the radiation. Fluke parasites? That's extremely rare and you probably have a higher chance of getting that through eating beef. I've never heard of anyone getting infected with that, and didn't in Japan. Unless you are eating raw freshwater fish, I don't think you need to be concerned with that.

As far as sushi and parasite shit I bet a million different things could give me a parasite every week in everday life but that's not stopping me from going outside. I've never had sushi but want to do it very soon.

I know they're rare but I've seen on a few health forums of people that have them. I know a lot of parasites may be rare but I'd rather avoid them as much as possible personally. I wont even drink unfiltered sink water now (cause of fluoride too) or salad that wasn't washed properly. I think you can also get tapeworms from beef too.

Speaking of food what is the easiest way to know what your ordering? I would really rather get the local experience and distance myself from where a lot of the tourists eat. Are there easy to use guides dedicated to interpreting menus or anything?

Interesting. Guess I'll keep that in mind if I eat sushi later on. I usually eat cooked salmon and vegetable sushis anyway. Not really the same as other kinds of sushis but I think it tastes pretty good anyway.

Why on earth would you advise against that? I plan on eating sushi until my stomach explodes.
Eat a lot of sushi! And don't be afraid to try new things. Some of the sushi there is pretty gnarly.
There's a lot of "fast food sushi". I.e. not the quality you'd get from a sushi restaurant in the USA. Many of the places have the sushi going around the bar on a conveyor belt, and it's a la carte. So not quite as fresh as you may want it to be.
I was initially disappointed with the sushi I'd been eating over there, until I went to a legitimate sushi restaurant. Then I was blown away, it was so good.
Also, be sure to check out a few restaurants that specialize in "soba". It's a kind of buckwheat noodle. Good soba is delicious.

Yeah... I'm way too much of a sushi snob to even set foot in a revolving sushi or fast food sushi place

Suit yourself I'd be taking full advantage of those when I needed a quick meal; I love sushi/sashimi too.
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but I've heard many locals drink heavily. Sitting down for dinner with a few bottles of sake and beer, drinking heavy throughout the meal and staying at the table drinking afterwords til near bed-time. So I would try to pace myself if I sat down for dinner like this keeping in mind I will be drinking for the rest of the night.

That is also very true. I drink maybe once every 2-3 months here at home. Very moderately.
In Japan, I was drinking every single night with dinner. It's just ingrained in the culture there. Like it's expected of you to drink. My first night there my GF's dad took us to his favorite little fish restaurant and he got me fucking wasted on beer and shoju , I couldn't handle it.. I had to leave early. I learned my lesson.. after that I stayed away from the sake and only drank beer with dinner

What does a quality sushi meal run $$$? I am more interested in establishments that put the food first, I could care less about a "5-Star dining experience"..

I left a tip in the Hard Rock cafe in Kobe, and the waitress spent about a half hour searching the entire mall to find me and give it back.

Well you're in luck because most places in Japan put the food / customer first. I didn't go into any cheap or revolving sushi places, but I hear there are some that are decent. Quality sushi is pretty expensive. I guess it depends where you go, and what you get. But expect to pay about what you would pay out here at a high quality sushi place... maybe a bit more. I remember eating sushi at the fish market in Tokyo.. fresh tuna that was just caught.. That was this:

I think that plate cost like ~15-20? It was also the best tuna I've ever put in my mouth. No wait.. I lied.. this was the best fish I've ever had
That sashimi was absolutely orgasmic. This was served in some little hole in the wall restaurant in Kyoto that served us the best food of our lives. We never would have found it by ourselves, but we stayed at a Ryoken and asked the lady where to get some good tapas and she took us there. She actually walked us 3 blocks and escorted us through the door Some of the other stuff at that place:

And yeah there are no tips no tipping in Japan. So even if the food is more expensive... it pretty much evens out because you don't tip.

the couple times i went to tokyo, i stayed at the sakura hotel in jimbocho. really cheap and the people seemed trustworthy.
of course it would be best to have a guide, but here are some things i would recommend doing.
- get up really early one morning, like 5am, and get on the first train to the tsukiji fish market. wander around there and watch all the japanese dudes bring in the fresh kills for the day. also, eat breakfast at one of the restaurants there. - try to spend a night in roppongi, going to some bars [EDIT] - also try to check out the american city in roppongi. there is a this huge gated community there with high rises that contain HOUSES. like multiple story apartments in the high rises. it's so rich it's unbelievable. poke around there and see if you can get in for a tour. - spend some time in akihabara, looking in the discount electronic stores - spend a night in shibuya and harajuku, check out the jingubashi bridge and take a walk through yoyogi park - spend a night taking a train ride through odaiba, checkn out the ferris wheel and all that. that's a romantic place! - there is some museum of ancient japanese art and samurai era stuff, that museum is really cool - visit some of the shrines
honestly, i can list off things to check off a list but the BEST experiences you are going to have in japan is finding random japanese dudes and getting drunk with them, and asking them what they think you should do. in the sakura hotel lobby, there is a bar with people from all over the world hanging out there all the time drinking and smoking cigs. it reminds me of the end of the world in chrono trigger, like a little tiny piece of heaven . if you run out of stuff to do, just offer to buy some beers or cigs for some of the people there and start talkin' about what you want to do. you might even find a group of people to tag along with for an outing.
dude... japan is so cool. have fun if you go. i'll be jealous.

I want to eat at Sukiyabashi Jiro, though it's something like $400 a person and have to make a reservation a couple months ahead of time I must do it though, hopefully next year.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

love hotels look crazy but they are extremely cheap
the subways/trainstations are a nightmare to navigate though and I can't imagine finding directions in a place like that

Tokyo Narita airport has to be the one of the worst thought out airports I've ever been in. Crawling with hot flight attendants, though, so I guess it's not all that bad.
