Any experiences with Japan?
    #19144688 - 11/16/13 10:03 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I am going to Japan for 18 days, most of the trip is school related but a friend and I extended the flight back so we have 7 days to do as we please.  Any advice on where to go in the Tokyo area?

We will probably be couch surfing and/or staying at Hostels.  I have never been over seas so any advice at all is appreciated!

If you get a chance, ride the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Tokyo up to Sendai or Morioka and see some of the more northern areas for a day or two.  Go to Mt. Fuji.  See some of the museums that have stuff from the Samurai era.  Definitely get into the night life.  If you are into jazz they have some HOT jazz clubs.

Be nice and try to hook up with a Japanese girl.  She'll show you a lot that you wouldn't have found on your own.

I heard Japanese people have a love/hate relationship with white people. Like they secretly admire the hell out of white people (which is why japanese cartoon characters are animated with big eyes and hair like like white people) but publicly they act like they are superior. In any case I heard they are very race-conscious, which is the opposite of what I'm used to where I live, so I would be interested in experiencing it. Let me know your experience with this phenomenon when you return.

I rode on a packed train in Tokyo, and was standing crunched in, facing this little japanese chick with big tits.  I got a hard-on against here stomach and she looked up at me and gave me a :smirk:

This x1000
Respect is fucking huge in Japan. Don't be a "gaijin" - which basically means arrogant white asshole or outsider. aka don't act like the typical douchebag cocky American. Respect their customs and way of life.

If you live in the US, the golden rule for traveling to pretty much any other country is say you are from Canada.

Yeah, it's almost embarrassing to tell people you are from America. They do have a love/hate relationship with Americans, they love our pop culture but they hate the lazy disrespectful  asshole mentality that we produce.

The USA is hated with a fiery passion.

Sew some small Canadian flag and maple leaf emblems to your luggage

I stayed in Yokohama with a host family for 3 weeks back when I was in highschool.  It was awesome!

We only went to Tokyo for a day so I don't have a lot to tell you about it.  Tokyo Disneyland was pretty fun.  Check it out!  You'll  when you see Japanese guys dressed as Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.

-Do your best to learn some simple Japanese phrases.  They love it when foreigners make a genuine effort to speak their language.

-Be polite as possible!

-Take your shoes off when entering a home is a must!  Aligning them with the "toes" facing the outside of the home is extra respectful, and will get you bonus points.

-Grab a copy of "The Japan Times".  English newspaper there, it's extremely liberal but interesting insight into a Japanese perspective of world affairs.

-Go to Karaoke bars!  It's so much fun.

-Public transit is a must.  It helps to at least familiarize yourself a little bit with the train system.  Obtaining an English copy of the train schedule beforehand will help you a lot.

A lot more stuff I can say about it.  Have fun man!

Well, of course not Canada. And Mexico doesn't care. But any country other than Canada and Mexico, you'd better fly that maple leaf.

Yeah OP - at the very least try to learn some basic Japanese before you go.
If you'll mostly be in Tokyo.. it's not as big of a deal.. as Tokyo is very multicultural and a lot of people speak English
But don't go there thinking everyone or even most people speak English - they don't. Everyone speaks Japanese and everything is written in Japanese.
Learning some basic phrases and learning how to understand some will go a long way, and they will respect you more for trying to learn their language.

As for places to go, if you like games/electronics, definitely don't miss the Akihabara district.
Shinjuku has a lot of the nightlife... and Shibuya is where a lot of the shops/ young people / fashion is.

My host family was loaded and the grandparents own a villa on Mt. Fugi.  We spent 4 days at their villa in the woods on the mountain.  It was fucking awesome!

We rented bicycles and spent a lot of time exploring the area.  Also played a lot of airsoft in the woods.  My buddy got stung by a "bear bee" (Asian giant hornet).  You should've seen his face when the Japanese grandmother sucked the poison out of him.  I still laugh about that to this day.

don't be loud or arrogant, the locals will put up with you, the yakuza will probably kill you if you act out near them. My brother narrowly escaped the yakuza on a drunken night out. they decided to beat the shit out of the japanese guy near him for allowing a white idiot near their club.
