So cal morel ?
    #19144687 - 11/16/13 10:03 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Found this little guy growing in a wood chipped area near a bunch of leratiomyces ceres. Only a few inches high and kind of black and white. I just left it where it was since it's like right next to my home

Wow, amazing! I've never seen anything like it!
It's not a morel, I'd call it a stinkhorn of some kind, Phallaceae family.

Aye wow. That's what I thought - certainly looks like rotting gleba in there but the stem is very Helvella/Morchella and the ridges and stature are morel-like. It's an interesting one.

Bizzare, I totally agree with Joie on that assessment. Which lands an ID absolutely NO WHERE!

Do us a favor and keep an eye out for more of them possibly at different stages of development. Also does it smell awful, like rotting flesh possibly?

Interesting ! :smile2: Is there anything I could do to help with an ID ?
I had no idea it was there (or it wasn't) when I saw the leratiomyces patch yesterday morning

you don't really need a microscope, there should be enough macroscopic info to go on.  If you do collect this, take a cross section photo so we can see the guts.

Cook it in butter or olive oil, kind of a high temperature.  When it is done (browned on all sides) add a tiny bit of salt and pepper.

Well, our morels look like normal morels, not some mutated alien brains, and grow in spring, a normal time for morels.

That's what I would do but I would add you should try it without salt/pepper to get a more "true" taste and then add that if you're not happy.

Mushrooms are pretty unpredictable but I always associated morels with the Spring.  That's quite a cool find.  Check for more!

I think salt and a bit of pepper bring out the true taste.  I add more stuff once I know the flavor.

I am about to make some Tom Kha soup with a ton of Agaricus bisporus, wish me luck!

It was super difficult finding coconut milk without sugar in Mexico, but the stuff I got seems really good.  Making it now!

There is no galangal here so I am using ginger instead.  No kaffir lime leaves or fish sauce in Mexico City either, but that doesn't matter much.

I am cooking a triple batch, with a ton of shrimp and fish.

And so it begins!

I strongly urge everyone reading this to try the same recipe, but there are 2 things you have to watch out for:

1) Salt content

The chicken stock already has a ton of salt, so always taste it first before adding more.  You can always add more salt, but never less.  The last time I made this the caldo de pollo had a ton of salt and I ended up tripling the batch to bring it down to a reasonable level.

2) Chiles

The last time I made this, it was almost too hot.  I really like hot foods so I thought it was awesome, not sure if all my friends agreed.

Other than that you can pretty much add any mushroom or other ingredient.  The broth has so much flavor that you can even add yucky mushrooms like Suillus or Gomphidius and it will still taste awesome.

Morchella rufobrunnea often stains reddish/orange in age.

Yes, you should dry them if they are not going to be eaten for a few days.

Ok, they're spread out on paper sitting with a fan pointing at them on it's lower speed, is this ok ?
And how do they taste dried ?

Under a fan on paper should be fine or on cardboard make sur to stir them up once a day to help dry them evenly Try to stay away from newspaper even though they use rice and soy ink its unappealing when it sticks to your mushrooms. I would slice them in half and rinse out any larvae before I dried them. If they are anything like M. Esculenta I bet they will be savory with a slight smoke flavour especially when dried. Flavors tend to condense and concentrate in dried mushrooms.

Depends on the relative humidity, temperature, how strong the fan is and how large the mushsrooms are.

The ones from the right look like Psathyrella and on the left you have some Coprinoid (the grey ones)

edit: Maybe they're all just the same, sorry just finished making my honey liquor and it's not helping, at first glance they resembled something like Psathyrella candolleana but the stipe looks coprinoid

Morchella rufobrunnea is in season right now, it's a winter-early spring fruiter that grows in wood chips. Not really an indicator that spring Morels will be popping up in the forest, although that time is coming soon.

I checked the burns in Southern Oregon and the cups and jellies were out and soil temps were around the 50-53 range at 1400 ft.  What do you think two weeks?

I'm sorry man, sick babies are heartbreaking.

The trilliums were getting ready to bloom, the ones along the creeks had almost fully formed blossoms that haven't cracked open yet.  The Geopyxis carbonaria were so thick the ground looked orange in some places.  Some of the brown Peziza were the size of an opened hand.

Morchella rufobrunnea fruits any time it rains, they don't need to wait for morel season.
