Sowing grain on colonized substrate?
    #19144529 - 11/16/13 08:25 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Just an idea: how would sowing a hand full of grain seeds affect the myco growth? Will the growing grain drain resources from the myc or will there be some sort of symbiosis?

If they're uncooked, they'll either sprout or contaminate.  If they're pasteurized, they'll either be colonized or contaminate.  If they're sterilized they'll contaminate.

Sprouting grains don't usually wreck a substrate, but at best they'd take water out of the substrate.  There is no symbiosis with cubensis, which is a saprophyte and doesn't form mycorrhizal associations with grass.

The WBS would be fully colonized & put under a layer of verm. Then out-of-the-bag grains are sprinkled on top.

You can put your grass seeds anywhere you want to, man.  Cubensis doesn't form mycorrhizal associations with grasses here or there, it does not form them anywhere.  It does not form them in a house, it does not form them with a mouse.  It does not form them in a box, it does not form them with a fox.

Ha! As long as it won't have an adverse effect on the psilo.

How can they contaminate a colonized substrate?

Uncooked grains straight from the bag aren't a colonized substrate.  But whatever, it's your modified rez tek grow.  Do what you want and take lots of pictures.

As van der griegen said this would have pretty much no benefits, but could potentially allow contams to get a foothold. Yes the fully colonized sub underneath is pretty contam resistant. When we say this we are referring to the fact that mold spores will have a hard time germinating on fully colonized material. However providing an uncolonized source of nutes for them to germinate on, like your grass seed is going to give them a foothold that they wouldn't normally have.
