Can I mix the Colonized rye into the coir/verm with my hands?
    #19143939 - 11/16/13 02:14 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I am about to pout coir/verm into the monotub, I was wondering If I could mix the colonized rye in with my hands or must i use a spoon or something?

I would have to recommend wearing gloves.

I have mixed my tubs with bare hands before, but I also suggest wearing gloves.

Mix the grains as evenly as possible into the substrate....a top layer of substrate to cover exposed grains is not necessary.

I wore gloves, and wiped them down in alcohol.

But the bucket was exposed to open air for like 3-5 minutes because I had to tape up all the holes and then seal the top with plastic .. so I am pretty sure the contams are already in there lol...

But we will see.

Your substrate is contam resistant, as well as your fully colonized grains.

I am 90% sure you will be fine....this is not a sterile process....

Sometimes when i leave the grains exposed on the top they get moldy. Only molds with rye for me. I did not have any problem with wbs exposed though.

As long as you properly pasteurized your coir/verm you will be completely fine. No worries, I have been very lazy with some of by monotub spawnings and they actually turned out better than when I tried to be very sterile.
