What the hell to go for in college? * 1
    #19143356 - 11/15/13 11:17 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So I'm thinking of maybe going back to college.  I may have the oppurtunity so it might be stupid not to take it.  I have two e-commerce websites going that have potential to be businesses but there is some random luck involved so who knows how it'll pan out.

Regardless I think it might be a good idea to go to college if I can think of a degree to go for.  I don't know what the hell to do tho.  I want something interesting that will also pay off and open doors to oppurtunities.    I've sucked at science and math in the past so I don't know if anything like that would work for me even though some of the best degrees have to do with science and math apparently.

Something in music would be cool but I don't want to end up with a degree that doesn't help me get anywhere so I'm not sure about getting another arts degree.

Any ideas about degrees?  Any degrees  that could lead to reliable jobs and also maybe even something interesting?

Engineering, especially electrical, mechanical, and chemical (petroleum engineering.) Trust me on this one, you won't be hurting for $ and it is easy to get a job.

I've heard language interpreting could make a lot of money if that's what you mean. That could def be something to look into.

I hear that. That could be cool.  I'm not very good at math and science though but maybe that isn't the main thing to make it in engineering. I'm gonna try to look into that and see what it takes.

I'd recommend not majoring in business unless you plan on opening your own company.
Picking a specific major is smart because then you can have a specific job in mind when you graduate.

language interpreting will not make you "a lot" of money and if you're not already highly proficient in another language chances are it's too late for you to become good enough in a second language to translate at the level required to get paid for it. the positions that get paid are mostly in courtrooms and hospitals. my degree in spanish, i have thought about doing this, but even being a professor pays more than being an interpreter. and it's a lot more rewarding

I already started an online business - e-commerce site I'm working on, I don't need college for it tho lol - it's pretty straightforward.  Just takes some search engine optimizing to get visitors hopefully and see how people react to the site.

That sounds interesting but sounds like it may take someone who's good at science to learn and do it, etc...

good at science is a pretty broad thing to say. it is a field of study that requires hard work and dedication. you will be required to do math and engineering and a bit of chemistry related stuff. so it's certainly not easy. but dude, trust me. people will be beating down your door to give you a job. women will be beating down your door to try to get with you. you will be very confident in knowing that you are one of the most highly in-demand people in the world. i work with a girl who is about to finish hher degrees in petroleum engineering and her job is already lined up to be making 85k annual starting plus bonuses with the realistic goal of making six figures within 5 years. and she is 22. i am pretty jealous

also you can learn to like what you do. and you also can do what you like during your paid vacation time and evenings and weekends. having a job that gives you confidences and self-reliability (and even the ability to give back charitably in whatever ways you like to give back) means a lot during adulthood

I've tried that for a while but it didn't work.  It would be cool if it could but it doesn't always work that way.  I tried starting a band for a while and it is lolsy how many times it didn't pan it cause of people skimping out or miscommunication, etc...  I can't sing unfortunately so a solo gig isn't really for me and I don't do a lot of sampling stuff, so I'm not sure about being an electronic artist ether.      I really should tho but money is a factor in all these things.

I wouldn't want to be a homeless musician even if music was what I was most 'into'. That door is still open but more options is better really.

That does sound pretty amazing.  I'm really not so good at math though - I don't know why but complicated math makes me feel retarded but it could be if  I really work hard at it and study all day I could do it.  I think doing it could be cool  Thanks for the idea. I think I'll look into it and see if I could realistically do it.

I personally think it is a horrible idea to go to college if you don't really know what to do.  I think it's only good to go to college if you know for sure what you want to do going in, or if you're getting financial aid opportunities that only apply if you go straight out of high school.

IF you don't really know what you want to do, you run a risk of finding out you don't like what you're studying, and changing your major one or a few times, and that's how you really get stuck in the college debt trap.

Not to mention if you take out large loans to get a degree in a high-paying field you don't like, then you will be financially forced to work in that field long-term just to pay back your debt, and you will be stuck in a miserable job out of financial necessity.  That can really fuck up your life.

Plus you say you have two e-commerce businesses.  If you really want your small businesses to succeed then I think you need to be investing every second/penny in them right now.  I don't think you have any resources to spare for college if you want to feed those ventures.

So to make things final, I would say in your situation you should definitely NOT go to college, or you should at least be fairly certain about what you wanna do before you enroll.

Business might sound good but in reality most college degrees today don't mean shit.  Business is one of the most common bachelor degrees out there and it really doesn't offer you jack shit in most cases.  Master's degrees are the new college level education, sad but true.  If you want a job actually involving what the name of your major is, expect to spend the extra time and money get at least a master's.  Otherwise, you are a dime a dozen.

That's not meant to sound pessimistic or discouraging, just simply accept it as truth and plan for it.  I can't even tell you how many people I know (and I bet you can verify it from your own experience) that have a degree in this or that but are working as bartenders, bank tellers, waiters/waitresses/retail, etc etc etc.

But from the people I've come in contact with, business degrees are considered especially "general" and really not worth a damn as far as getting a legit job based on your education alone.  Meaning, get ready to be entry level/intern and try to work your way up and have your education basically mean jackshit other than maybe having them unlock the front door for you.  Same is true for the majority of degrees in this day and age.  Master's degree or learn to like being an intern or doing a menial job that was, 5 years ago, punk off the street, data entry type shit.

There are more people imprisoned for the commission of drug offenses in the United States - close to 500,000 - than are incarcerated in England, France, Germany, and Japan for all crimes combined.  Examined in another way, the United States has 100,000 more people incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses than all the countries of the European Union combined, despite the fact that the European Union has 100 million more citizens. :crankey:

I hear that.  I'm not rushing into college or anything but thinking as an idea if it makes sense later at some point.  I also am pretty much spending most of my money on these sites as well as time working on them now - as it's taken a bit of fine tuning and getting things together for the sites to get going. Pretty much taking whatever time is needed to get sites fine tuned now and optimizing them for search engines.

I hear that about business degrees.  That's why I haven't gone for business degrees or thought about them too much. I guess a masters in business might be the way to do it like you said.    The thing is in starting a business/e-commerce site I think I'm learning how to do it while doing it pretty much.  It can be pretty straight forward depdning on the type of business really.    The legal technicalities of starting a business or what type to start can also be found by researching online and seeing what the local laws are regarding businesses in your area.

The Business school offers the most workable degrees you can get. I don’t know why people are talking shit on business. Ya economics sucks, but literally every other degree offered by the business school(econ isn’t even through the business school at some uni’s) is pretty damn good.

Accounting and you are guaranteed a job right out of school, MIS too. Biz admin and finance are also pretty solid, especially if you get a good internship and grades.

Unless you are good at math or science, business is probably the best degree you get. Obviously shit like Math, Comp Sci, and Engineering are going to be better for your immediate job prospects. Have fun in discrete mathematics and bullshit like that, ill be laughing all the way from my fly fishing class.

The shitty thing about business school is you are going to hate one of the disciplines with a passion and you will have to take a lot of the classes. Management classes were created by the devil himself, but they aren’t really that hard and there is a lot of roll over between classes. So if you have a bunch of business classes a lot of the same concepts show up in multiple classes, giving you way more free time.
