How can I stir my coir/verm as sterile as possible?

I am in the middle of the bucket tek pasteurization and I am 20 minutes away from the part where you have to stir the stuff really good and then put the bucket lid back on.
I was wondering how can I do this as sterile as possible? Should I soak a giant spoon in rubbing alcohol and then let it air dry then use this to stir the cori/verm?
If not, how would you advise I go about stirring it?

just stir it man if the waters hot enough to pasteurize your coir/verm then its hot enough to pasteurize that wooden spoon

Alright thanks !
I am just gonna get my alcohol burner lamp and heat a metal spoon before stirring.
Should I spray lysol through out the room I stir it in?

You can use your bare hands. You're pasteurizing it so that it's contam resistant anyway. It's an open air procedure. The thing I would be worrying about is using bucket "pasteurization" rather than proper pasteurization.
You're mixing it with a sterile spoon in open air. That makes no sense. The air has 100000s of contaminant spores that are going to land in there when you stir it anyway. Read up on the differences between sterility, sanitary, and pasteurized. You could lick your spoon before using it to stir.

Yeah, I know, materials were cheap so I just decided to bucket pasteurize to see if it would work or not.

? it costs less to do proper pasteurization. You don't have to buy a bucket...

You need a good meat thermometer.....tiny bit more expensive than a bucket....

Speaking of notahacker, how goes your bucket pasteurization experiments? Any quantitive results?

Using 180F degree water instead of boiling it seems to work just as good as proper pasteurization for me at the moment....
But I never really had a big continuous problem....out of about 40 tubs using Damion5050's tek only the last batch of 10 tubs gave me issues.....
It is going to take a while, for me at least, to come up with anything conclusive.
I properly pasteurize now, for the most part.....just to be safe lol.

I was talking about the vermiculite and coir. In general they are pretty cheap.
And I just went to stir the bucket and I realized that my coir is not dissolved yet and is still quite hard, is this normal?
Its an hour after I poured the boiling water into the bucket.

Seems wrong to me but I don't bucket Dry coir is not being pasteurized, that's for sure.

Hmm.. maybe it needs a little longer to break down..
There is still a good 4-6 hours that it needs to be sitting..
But it looked like the verm absorbed all the water or something.
I tried to crush the coir brick as much as I could with the mixing spoon.

in 4-6 hours it wont be at pasteurization temp. You want all the coir hydrated and between 140-160 for one full hour. As long as you're doing that your good even if it's in a bucket.

I spend about 5 minutes per bucket breaking up the coir brick before adding the verm.
This helps the brick dissolve.
I use 5.5qts of water to 3qts of verm and a brick.

Should I boil like half a quart of water and then add it to the bucket and stir up again?

I would start over personally.....but that's just me.
You could try breaking up the brick a little first then adding 1/2qt more water.
Gotta do somethin, lol.

add the half quart see if it's at field capacity and then load it into jars or bags and pasteurize it.
