I opened one of my grain jars to get a smell of it. It does not smell bad , it smells like germinated seeds. What does a bacteria filled jar smell like?

I recently had a WBS jar bacteria contam. I didn't smell anything when I opened the jar (just smelled like WBS) but after I dumped out the grains I could smell it.

That was a bad idea to simply open the jars before at least %80 percent colonization. You compromised your whole sterile procedure.

I wait until my jars are 100% colonized, I then shake them and allow them to recolonize.
A healthy WBS jar should recolonize again quickly (2-3 days) A contaminated jar that might appear healthy will either take considerably longer to recolonize(7+ days), or won't recolonize and likely show signs of contamination after a shake.
Never ever open your uncolonized jars to have a smell. A useful alternative is using poly-fill in your WBS jar lids, which allows you to smell anything funky that might be going on without having to open your jar for a whiff.
The smell of healthy cube mycelium has a pretty strong earthy feel, I love the smell to be honest. The smell of anything else puts me off, like I know that if it doesn't smell like cube myc then it doesn't matter what it smells like, it's a contamination.
Smell enough jars and you'll get it down pretty quickly what a jar should and shouldn't smell like.
