Oat Groats contaminated?
    #19140821 - 11/15/13 12:38 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So I attempted to experiment with oat groats for grain spawn. I was unable to find rye or wheat berries. WBS was a little expensive. I was worried about moisture content of cracked corn. So I thought WTH. Anyways, I am a bit worried about a couple of the jars. There is growth on the side of the jar which makes me think it is cobweb. Any input would help.

For GE I have a hole drilled through the lid and poly fiber for a filter. Just made some new lids with RTV for inoculation points.

I shopped at tractor supply and lowes for wbs. It was about double the price of oat groats. I got a 50# bag of oats for like $14. WBS was like $25 for a 20# bag.

I think your problem is your moisture content with oats. I've never used them but it seems that it could be difficult to get the moisture levels dialed in.

Shortcuts in this hobby usually lead to disaster. Do some reading, find a tek, and follow it to the tee.

Once you have at least one process down, go experiment on you  own and document it.

I hope you like eating oats...

why not go to the bulk bins in supermarkets or pet stores? Use the better grains and you will not end up wasting a bunch of time and spores.

I get my rye grains at a feed store. 60 lbs for 25$

Rye is by far the easiest and most consistent grain to use IMO. Perfectly hydrated dry grains every time.

I read the tek there was for oat groats. Most people said follow the same tek as rye berries. Some said don't simmer. I simmered for about 30 mins. If I did it again, I would probably cut down on the simmer time to like 20 mins. It has been a pain finding reasonably priced grains. I live in a very very rural area and I am surrounded by corn, but no other grains.

I called every feed store in the area. None of them had rye. I looked as far as two hours away. Finally found a organic farm in Kansas, but they never got back with me. Luckily, I found a farm supply that can get white or red winter wheat just last week.

Ugh! I hate wally world, but I guess I will have to break down and look at their WBS prices. I will just have to accept being in a shitty mood after venturing in walmart. Guess I will just cut through automotive or garden section.

Damn maybe it's just me but I'd rather pay 35 bucks for a 50lb bag of rye.

Jeepers, even chicken scratch grains are only 15 bucks for 50#. 4 or 5 different grains in that stuff. I haven't experimented much with them - just whole in a few normal jars and ground up in a couple of 'pf chickens'. Didn't break up well, but worked in all cases, nothing really any different than anything else imo. All grains will work for you. Rye is recommended, its nutritious, easy to deal with, and the size lends to breaking up well in the jar.

Peace,
FT

Thanks for the Wally World info. I was able to purchase some WBS for $7 for a 20# bag. I bought a couple to get started.

now rinse it a few times, you dont have to throw all the floaters away, let soak for 12 hours and once it hits a rolling boil dump in strainer and let it steam dry load jars 2/3 full and pc for 90 mins @15psi and inoculate once they cool naturally

and keep us posted
