If your UK based mate then try pets at home , Aspen bedding , beech wood chip work fine . They sell beech chip in the parrot section . Once you have a little spawn started look around where you live for woodchip , the council now chip most fallen trees in the UK .I found fresh chips to be a problem so I stored them for a few months then pasteurized them before using .You can also find a local tree surgeon as they have to pay to dispose of wood chip so the willingly give it away .

Found it - http://www.petsathome.com/shop/natural-beech-chip-bird-cage-floor-dressing-20ltr-by-monkfield-24301
Great advice - thanks mate
Sorry as I know this is a lazy question as I could probably search for the answer...BUT....any idea how many litre of chips I would need for say a 1 metre square bit of ground? Could I just take the financial hit on ordering a few of those bags rather than sourcing fresh local chips??

If I were looking at making a square metre bed I would get 2 of those bags of beech chip , 2 of bags of Aspen Bedding and a bag of bedding straw . The links are only for reference , I know my local wilco sells aspen bedding and straw much cheaper .
A long with your bed you should try growing them in a plater pot as a side project , they work well and even when the weather hits freezing out side you can move them some where to continue fruiting .

the bedding would probably make an ok filler though, I've got a friend that I showed how to make a cyanescens patch of his own and he ended up using almost nothing but aspen pet bedding. It ended up fruiting on its first year, pretty damn well at that!
But overall the alder chips are MUCH better, they're exactly what both of these mushrooms crave and they go nuts for them.

Thanks - assume you're in America though?? Having difficulty finding a similar product for a price that isn't ridiculous in UK...

No problem, and yes I'm in America but there's got to be some similar smoke chips in your area for a reasonable price. I found this brand just by luck wandering around various super markets, most of them carry it for $3.99 a bag which is PLENTY worth it
I just put a sprinkle on some cyan and azure butts that I have going on cardboard last night, and I'm certain they'll have a solid grip on all of the chips within the next 48 hours. I'm tellin ya man, small alder chips ready for smoking are the cats PJs!
