Whos comin with me!? no but seriously though, with enough people, you could do this with only a few thousand more or less each. http://goldcountry.craigslist.org/reo/4042282693.html
http://www.fearnet.com/news/news-article/remote-california-ghost-town-sale Ever wanted to be mayor of your very own ghost town? According to this real estate posting on Craigslist, an abandoned gold rush-era village in Northern California could make that dream come true... assuming you've got the coin to plunk down for the twelve-acre mountain property. The remote village of Seneca, CA, located near a historic former gold mine, has been in the hands of the same owner since 1970 – when it was a semi-famous site for music festivals, earning it the nickname “Woodstock of the West.” Today, it's got a quiet, serene but very mysterious atmosphere, heightened by the massive trees that have grown up through the floorboards of some buildings. The owners are now looking to sell the property, which they describe as quite scenic, but the northern mountain path that leads to it (shown above) is said to be “darn scary.” It's also deadly: one wrong turn could end with a 1000-foot plunge. Check out the listing for more details... but please, serious inquiries only.

If you want to do something like this, there are cheaper places to buy land. It sounds like there really isn't even a "town", just a few broken down shacks/cabins.
Look on ebay. You can get similar sized lots of land for under 1k. Way cheaper.

fair enough. i like the history of the place, and an old bar. as well as the island, river, and bridges. but i hear ya. figure, build a few cabins, and/or drive up a bunch of RVs, build a barn maybe, some greenhouses, and a stage, and your set. hold lil gathering in the summer. ask people to bring provisions to stockpile for the winter..... ahhh, pipe dreams. but this is fairly doable.
i too have been to places like this when i was out west. i drove a full sized schoolbus that we converted into our home. i was way up in siskiyou county. stayed with a friend in a trailer, as well as in our bus on a plot of land down the street another time, and worked on another friend i met digging post holes for a fence. crazy work. the ground was all rock.
there was a commune, called Black Bear Ranch, a bit further up the mountain. drove the bus up there. road was insane!!!!!
not much of a commune anymore. only a handful of people stay year round. but it was really cool. there was one main house and a couple lil shantys scattered about the property. crazy remote. kinda almost ended up livin there for a bit. but just stayed for a few days. the kats livin there were a bit pretentious. kinda terratorial.
they made a documentary about it. yall should check it out. its a pretty good watch. old footage and accounts from some kats that stayed there back in the 60's. seriously, should check it out.

im trying to find a good torrent of it but atm there are only two seeders on this one and none on pirate bay. ill have to hop on my old laptop to seed it.
you can get it here, but its lookin slow... http://kickass.to/commune-2005-t468123.html#main

This actually doesn't sound like a bad idea with the way this country is going. Lets take back the wild west with our own town

That would be pretty cool to walk around, and I mean in the right hands who knows maybe they could develop it a bit. There is that one PA town Centrailia that has the fire burning underneath it that is pretty much abandoned now besides a person or two... One was like a 90 year old mayor who was the Shieff, Mayor, and fire department I think but he's probably dead now. I remember one time a buddy and I got lost in northern PA and we stopped to ask for directions in some stripped down former mining town.. completely empty. It was eerie but pretty fuckin cool too. Wish we woulda stayed longer but, we were lost in northern PA (in a ghost town) and that is never a good thing.

This isnt that far from me. It would be cool To take a little drive out there and check it out. Plus that area of hwy 89 is pretty cool. It's close to Lassen volcanic park which means there's sweet lava tubes scattered in the forest near by. Pretty cool to find those when your just hiking around.

I've actually been thinking about something like this for the longest while.
Like, get a group of people to chip in and buy land somewhere and just make a small town out of it. It would be interesting.

The main question is could you make the property profitable by growing weed there. If not the place is a worthless ghost town.

Even if you didn't grow weed, having a town to yourself would be fantastic.

could always grow food, raise livestock, and, grow a shit ton of mushrooms seasonally outdoors. just inoculate the lot of the land with woodchips and woodloving actives, make straw/poo beds all over for cubes. as well as all kinds of gourmets. maybe even build a barn for shitake and oyster production.

and id imagine so long as you had x amount of people on the property with medical cards, you could grow weed.

Good land in a good location? For 1k you won't get a decent location anywhere I've heard of, unless you like dirt and perpetual solitude
