Medieval Folk Band Reviews

So here is the deal...I've stumbled across a movement that is going on in Europe which is similar to the sixties counterculture although it has some key differences and it highly reflects that within its music. So basically, this thread is being made so that I can ultimately and hopefully spread this amazing music and its phenomenal message to others who will listen and enjoy. The music is distinguished by the acoustic (usually) and tradtional (usually) instruments, the fact that several of the bands play in multiple languages, that most of these bands identify as polytheist, pantheist, shamans or animists, in other words, primarily pagan based. They typically play music based off traditional music such as Celtic folk (pipes, singing and drums) or Norse folk (horns, singing and drums). Some bands play multiple styles and some bands even play completely different genres such as medieval folk rock and medieval folk metal. This music is completely unique and I absolutely love it and I've told a few members here about it and they fell in love as well not to mention some even got their friends and family hooked, haha. So basically what I'm planing on doing is listening to one band and reading up on them for a day, everyday, so one band a day and then I am going to post my review of that said band (I will try to be unbiased as possible) after I've made a general conclusion as to what their music is and what crowd will like it and just a general overview of their talent, their style and their appeal. So I have a lineup of over 100 bands easily so I should be at this for a year, most likely. So if you have a suggestion of a band or a review of your own then don't hesitate to post it (I only ask that you try to be mature) and I will do my own review of that said band and see how they compare. Your opinions of my reviews and of bands that I post are more than welcome also. So here goes...I'm goin to start with the band that lead me to this flavor of mind blowing music and that band is...dun na an NAAAH...OMNIA!

OMNIA is obviously my favorite and I've spent many hours watching their live performances and listening to their songs in the past couple weeks. Originally they played more Celtic stuff but lately their sound has been changing. Everything I've heard from them has been amazing. They even made a reggae song (earth warrior) and a rap song (dance until we die) if you're into that, both were great. Every band member plays multiple insturments from the jaw harp, guitar, bouzouki, aulos, harp, piano, didgideroo, overtone flute, traditional flute, bag pipes, hurdy gurdy, tons of percussion, they really have an amazingly unique and blended sound that just fires your soul right up. I can't even begin to describe how I feel about this band. They're truly one of a kind. Their music is truly inspiring and I just can't get over it. I said that I wouldn't make a biased review but this one will be an exception because I really can't get over their flavor of music. It suits me perfectly! They also sing in various languages, do some chants, some instrumentals, just overall they are amazing brilliant in my humble opinion and I really hope you guys check them out or you'll be missing out! Most versatile band I've ever encountered!
Recentlyy links have been giving me trouble, if they don't work then just slink over to YouTube and type in OMNIA pagan folk lore OR OMNIA I don't speak human.

Dude, that's funny that you posted those two videos because those are two of my absolute favorites as well! Fee Ra Huri is intoxicating and they really get into the end of Morrigan Crown of War, they really jam from the soul. I wonder what happened to Phillip (guitarist) though. It seems that maybe hes not in the band anymore but I'm insure, it doesn't list him on their site. I have been doing the same with Faun and I may write a review before I go to bed tonight.

Today's band is...FAUN!
Chances are if you're a fan of OMNIA then you've probably heard of Faun! Faun is very similar to Omnia, they've even played and toured together. Comparing them is like comparing varieties of fruit, they're both juicy and delicious but one (OMNIA) has a twang and a explosion to it while the other (Faun) is more soft and sweet. Faun music is beautiful, genuine and serene. Slightly more folksy and less RocknRoll than Omnia. The one problem that you may have with Faun is that most of their music is not in English, however that doesnt take away the beauty of their music an infact increases it. their most recent album is mostly English. To me Faun is a delicate soft brand of folk sort of Celtic with some Bard folk string thrown in the mix. I highly recommend them if you're want to take a relaxing break away or if you just want a softer sound to your medieval folk music collection. If these links don't work then run a YouTube search on Faun "Golden Apples" and Faun "Satyros".

This review is for...The Moon&The NightSpirit!
This band is made up of two members who are both vocalists and multi instrumentalists, a male and a female. Their lives shows feature guests members. This band is comparable to Faun, in my opinion. Their sound is lovely and soft, most of their music is sung by the female lead. They're Hungarian based Pagan folk and their music reflects that. They typically sing of ancient Hungarian Pagan lore and most of their music is not in English much like Faun. Their song is also much less Celtic focused (not as much drums, chants and pipes/flutes) than both Faun and OMNIA and is more focused on strings such as the violin, lutes and hury gurdy. This is a great band to relax to as well. If the links don't work then run a search for in gardens and worlds undrempt and rego rejtem.

Next band, Rapalje!!!
The Crown & The Ring
Ride On
So this band is particularly unique in their style. It is in my opinion the most brilliant and perfect replication of a truly medieval style of music. If I ever wanted to go back in time I'm sure I'd find them playing in the nearest Irish or Dutch pub. Their style is very medieval FOLKSY, easy to listen to after a hard day on the farm when ya get to sit down with a pint and take a load off. They are the finest in bard/pub medieval music and I can't imagine a future band rivaling them in that category. Great band for medieval folk tunes for the common folk of the old ways.
Side note: I've reviewed several bands today because I have nothing else to do because its raining out and my fingers are about to fall off from playing guitar and I may not be able to get to a band tomorrow but we will see. I might do another review tonight.

Now this band is for you guys and gals that like electronic music! Yes, that's right! Medieval electronic blend. A band made to mix the ancient with the future...Valravn!
Kelling
Marsk
Personally I am not a fan of electronic and on a normal basis I would assume that a mixture of the magic of traditional instruments and the talentless perfection of electronica would be a horrible one. However, I find that I really like this band. The electronics are not overwhelming as I expected. Out of all the the songs I've listened to I have found that they have a more Nordic feel to them. Lead vocals are done by a female and of all their songs I have heard absolutely no pipes. The overall feel of music is different from what I love but still highly enjoyable. Definitely a must if you like electronics and you desire to hear a blend of medieval and future.

Hagalaz Runedance
Well this band had a short run however it was very popular. There isn't a whole lot to say about this band because its actually kind of hard to find information on them. Normally before I write a review I typically listen to songs and watch some live performances and read some information up on the band but I couldn't easily find anything besides their recordings. Honestly, this music is good but I really don't care for them. They're too bland for me and although they're good, they just don't jump start the soul for me. Of course, YMMV. I'm also choosing not to submit videos of this band because out of all the songs I listened to, I just couldn't pick two that really kicked some dust up.

Thanks, man. You'll really enjoy the next band then. They are very different. I'll post them tomorrow afternoon. I need to listen to them some more and I'm getting sleepy. The band after them will be great for anybody that liked the Rapalje band that I posted.
mindgnome said: My favorite medieval type song.
GreyMorph said: That's not medieval at all. It's an awesome song but that is 60s era folkrock/folk revival. I don't know if you were joking or if you don't understand why makes a genre a genre. There is several things that go into a genre that gives it it's own definition. Sometimes it's the instruments being played, the style, the vocals, the theory, the sound, sometimes it's just something people prefer to call it to give it its own sub category to make it easier or separate it from another genre and make it appear to be somethin of its own. An example of that would be grunge or folk revival.
Medieval folk is medieval folk because they typically play traditional instruments or more commonly acoustic instruments, they sing in European languages and their lyrics are typically pre Christian based as they generally play common folk music that one may have heard in the time period. There are other things that go into but that's just an example and of course there are exceptions to those rules and more so than not, for instance OMNIA mixes many traditional and even a few modern (guitar, piano ect) and many instruments from various cultures that aren't European. Valravn uses electronics as a modern medieval hybrid fusion to make their song but in general they are still considered medieval folk because of the fact that their style and sound is recognizable as folk and their instruments (besides the electronics) are traditional and they sing in European languages.
I'm not trying to belittle you, I'm not sure if you were jokin or didn't understand the concept. Either way, I still appreciate your comment as that is an awesome song and Jefferson airplane is bad ass, I'm very fond of their white rabbit song, haha.

Band: Corvus Corax
So this band has been around since 89, I assume its one of the originals of the medieval folk bands since its been around so long. These guys are big on making their music as authentic as possible, they only use traditional instruments and only play music in what they call the "old way" however I did read that they did some opera type versions and a metal album although I didn't hear any of that. I also didn't hear them sing in any of their songs and I'm unsure if they even use vocals at all. They did yell hey however. This is another band that I'm not too stoked about obviously. It's a good band it's just not to my tastes. This band is mainly composed of bag pipe players and drummers, it's fairly strange in my opinion. I like the idea of this band very much, I just didn't get into it as much as most of the previous bands. YMMV so just check em out!

Another OMNIA video, Old Man Tree.
Just thought I'd share this one with shroomery because it is based on a shroom trip that he took in which a tree spoke and sang to him. ;P I think it's a beautiful song.

And the amazing singer/songwriter, Damh The Bard!
Green & Grey
The Pipes Of Pan
This guy really impresses me! He is an avid Pagan/Druid and bard. As far as I know he only plays the guitar butI believe that he MAY a traditional oud or some other lute and a traditional mandolin, possibly flutes as well but that's only on his recordings as far as I'm aware. The live performances that I've seen (including an awesome song performed at a protest, I believe the name of the song is Robin Hood, look it up! It's amazing!) every song that I've heard was in English. Damh style is "bard" as in the traditional ways of bard folk meaning musician, poet and storyteller and he embodies that role with every fiber of his being and soul. He music is so simple and beautiful and spiritual, it can move mountains. This guy is really great at what he does! I highly recommend this one. He reminds me of Bob Dylan, if Bob Dylan had been an English, Pagan, Druid/bard. Haha.
Sidenote; I've also seen his website and his YouTube channel and I highly recommend checking it out. He even does some free online lessons if you're interested in learning guitar in DADAGAD (Celtic) tuning. I'm looking forward to learning some of his songs! He seems like a really down to earth and good guy in general, I definitely support his vision!

Check out the last review, damh the bard. His stuff is awesome! I think you'll really like it. He's very chill to listen to, it'd be great stoned. The next band I'm reviewing will be after I get some sleep but I think it's gonna be a good one and the one after that is gonna be a HEAVY metal pagan folk band. They claim that their the original " pagan metal folk" bands.

Elane
My Ivory Fairy
Paperboat & Silverkite
This band focuses on an ethereal music painting a surrealistic landscape with female vocals occasionally backed by make vocals and acommpanied by guitar, violin and flutes. They've got quite some talent but again, this is soft lovely music and I am a manly man who is only on rare occasions in the mood for this music but it is absolutely beautiful and makes great background music for you sensitive types. Great band though!
The next band is pure medieval metal so get ready!

Eluveitie, heavy metal THUNDER!!!
A Rose For Epona
Lament
This band I found highly interesting although unexpectedly so. The main two languages that they perform in are English and Gaulish which is an ancient dead language. I typically don't like heavy growling in metal but this bad is so awesome that I can't deny them for that! The male usually leads but they also have a female singer who has a gorgeous voice and i prefer her singing to his growling but their voices together are dramatic and beautiful. The band typically relies on the ELECTRIC guitar, electric bass guitar, and drums like most metal bands however they also play tons of traditional instruments such as flutes, bag pipes, hurdy gurdy, harps, mandolin, fiddle ect. I really love this bands style, it's truly unique and if you like metal and medieval music then this is the perfect band for you. Highly recommend checking them out especially you metal heads.

Bad ass, WARDRUNA!!!
Helvegen (Way To Hel)
Dagr
This bad ass band is the ultimate Nordic Vikings of the folk pagan medieval music scene. Their personal background is highly interesting and I suggest you read upon it. It's based of Nordic runes and folk lore. They only two albums and its rumored that they may only come out wih one more but hopefully that isn't true. One for each rune. The style of this band is all about powerful drum beats and vibrating powerful chants with an occasional flute or string instrument or female singer. This would make awesome meditiational music. The language is not English but it doesn't matte because English doesn't suit Nordic chants. Anywho, this band is so awesome I just bumped them up the list so I could review them quicker. Oh and you may recognize some of their songs from the history channel. Anyways, enjoy!
PS. OMNIA also had electronic remixes that I forgot to mention if anyone is interested. I'm putting some of these bands on my favorite band playlist and so far OMNIA, Faun, Damh the Bard and wardruna is solid on there, I may put rapalje, valravn, elane and eluveitie. I need to do some more listening to see how they truly fair. The ones that made it hit my soul just right.

Hey GreyMorph, this is quite a cool thread and I find some of my favourite projects in here. Good to see you posted Wardruna already, otherwise I would have done so right now. Their music moves me more than any other.
You seem to be quite fond of Omnia, have you had the chance to see them live? I find that their spirit has decreased in the last years, but they're still very good.
Here in central Europe we have a HUGE scene evolving around folk music and medieval reenactment. Bands like Omnia, Faun or Corvus Corax are widely known and thousands of people name them as their favourite music. If you ever happen to spend a summer in Germany, I can recommend some festivals to you: -Castlefest would be my favourite, it started with Omnia as the core element but now also features Faun every year and, in fact, almost every other band you posted so far. It's in the Netherlands just south of Amsterdam, every year at the first weekend of August. -Festival Mediaval takes place in early September in central Germany not far from the border to the Czech Rep. It is one of the largest festivals of the German "medieval" scene and regularly features the best bands. Sometimes they do miracles, like this year when they convinced Garmarna to play again after years of hiatus. -MPS is a travelling medieval market that sets up camp at a new place every weekend. Omnia can be seen regularly there, along with all the good things medieval markets have to offer like reenactment shows, horseriding, craft stores, workshops in forging and countless other things.
Enough writing, here you have a rather unknown band to enjoy: Virelai from Denmark.
And another video from Castlefest to show you how beautiful it is there.

I've watched videos of several of those festivals online and they look awesome. No unfortunately I haven't been to see OMNIA live. In America these bands aren't even recognizable. The only state that they've toured to is Oregon which is the further most from me. Lol. I neer thought I'd navy Europeans but here I am. I've read a few comments about opinions on OMNIA spirit decrease. What makes you think it's decreased? Anywho, I wish I could come to Germany. I'm also wanting to learn either Greek or German. I love the language.
Anywho, glad to see another fan!

Omnia was a project of several masterminds melting their influences into one giant orgasmic music. Then, about five years ago, one of the members, Steve Sic, steered towards becoming more visible as a front man, using the band as a platform for his own political views. It became unbearable and led to the departure of very important core members, most importantly Luka Aubri, but also Joe Hennon and Mich Rozek. Nowadays Omnia is not a band of equal members, but something like "Steve and band". Their musical quality nowadays is nowhere near the glory of everything until the Alive album, and what is most annoying is that the concerts are very predictable, everytime you see them these days it's exactly the same songs with exactly the same introductory sentences. It's really sad because this used to be one of the very best bands around. But yeah, everyone who has known them long enough to be able to compare old Omnia vs. new Omnia pretty much shares this opinon.
As for the festivals, they're absolutely amazing and I'm very grateful to have the chance to attend concerts of my favourite bands all the time - not only folk music, but also metal with bands like Eluveitie. I've met several people who immigrated to Europe from other continents mainly to be close to the best festivals.

That's awesome!
And yeah about Omnia, I've noticed that actually. I always wondered why Steve is always in the lime light, why the past members left and I'm still unsure if Phil is even in the band anymore? I have noticed this but I haven't been a fan for log enough to know the details. It's also hard to find truthful information about them in America, even online. I still love the band but I definitely see what you're saying. I also have seen him use the same opening line for two different songs with a few changes in wording. I didn't like that, he could have improvised a poem and it would have been amazing.
I don't know. I'd like more info.

Phil is not with them anymore. He was a nice dude and fun to talk to, but left no artistic impression; on stage he always imitated Joe just like Daphyd is only imitating Luka. Long story short: even if they claim otherwise, Omnia are pretty dead at the moment. I really hope Steve gets back to normal, otherwise they won't be around for much longer. Their faithful Dutch fanbase, necessary for them to make a living with concerts, is getting smaller too.
On the positive side there are countless other bands that are in full blossom at the moment. Here's another one: the great Danish band Asynje.

It's sad to hear this news. I'm always a little late to enjoy something.
I also noticed that about Phil and daphyd, they rarely ever showed any personality onstage. Only a handful of videos show them really jamming out.

Yeah, just stick to old albums and videos when it comes to Omnia
Here's something more experimental: the project Qntal, fusing medieval songs with electronica.

Sorry it's been a few days, I got caught up in some stuff and haven't had the time but here goes...this band is actually coming out of the middle of the order that I had set but I've been dying to review them and since I haven't had a whole lot of time to listen to the other bands I figured Id review one that I'm more familiar with so without further ado...
BLACKMORES NIGHT!
Under A Violet Moon
Ghost of a Rose
An amazing band consisting of two members, husband and wife. The guitar player you may recognize as he was an original member of the Deep Purple rock n roll band. This band is amazing and I think the first video speaks volumes about them and these two haven't faltered from that same beautiful sound that we love so much. So I highly recommend that you keep up with this band. It is also one of the most popular out of those that I've mentioned in this thread and more serious as well.
PS...have you ever seen so many beautiful women?!? I guess this genre only allows the most beautiful of women to sing in their bands. I'm not complaining! Enjoy, fellas. I will be posting another review tomorrow night.

This next band is called Trobar De Morte.
Sorceress
The Silver Wheel (Full Album)
Great band, soft sound, soothing style. It's like rain running down the window on a dark cloudy night. Beautiful and simple. As far as I know this band consists of a three musicians, a vocalist/keyboardist, a guitarist, and a drummer however I've seen pictures of three woman and four men and the live shows I watched had all those same folks, some playing recorder and hurdy gurdy ect. Maybe someone else can confirm this. Anywho, great band!

Daemonia Nymphe!
Invoking Pan
Daemonos
This band is highly interesting if you're into Hellenic polytheism or Greek philosophical music. This band is highly theatrical and they're as traditional and as bonfiade to the old way as they possibly can be. They use only traditional folk instruments and I'm fairly sure that they only use ones that were dominant or at least known to Ancient Greece. This music is the closest you'll get to recreating Ancient Greek so if you're interested in that then you better check this band out!

When I saw Trobar de Morte as support for Faun they used very elaborate instruments like whistles and a hurdy-gurdy.
I don't know if Daemonia Nymphe ever tour the US, but if you get the chance to see them, do it! It's a magnificent experience.
By the way, GreyMorph: I give you a rating of for great music taste

You're so lucky to see all these bands live. I don't think that any of them tour the US. As far as I know, Omnia is the only one to come to the US and I think they only went to Oregon. Ill be doing another review tonight if luck has it!
And thanks, buddy! Ill give you the same for your tastes and your pantheistic view.

Faun played in Seattle earlier this year. But apart from that most of the bands only tour Europe indeed. I was very happy for you guys in the states that Wardruna got confirmed for Stella Natura in September, but then they were denied their visas with the justification that Wardruna "does not qualify as a culturally unique band".
Stella Natura is a great festival, check it out if you don't know it yet. It takes places near Lake Tahoe. I actually considered to fly over and attend since I'm addicted to Wardruna concerts, but now I'm glad I didn't.

That's sucks! I used to live over near Lake Tahoe but now I'm on the other side of the continent. Basically they're going to the more liberal states and I live in one of the least liberal.
If this genre keeps up then it's only a matter of time before Americans finally get a good taste.

Arkona, another heavy metal band for the Pagan world!
Long ass Russian Title (Won't attempt spelling it correctly, lol)
Goi, Rode, Goi!
This band is Russian based, female vocals with heavy growling if you're into chicks that seem like they may turn into a werewolf at any second. this band seems pretty bad ass and next time I'm in a metal mood I will definitely listen to them some more. They are definitely not an acoustic but an electric band with a synth and electric guitar and bass as expected of a heavy metal band however they also use traditional acoustic instruments. I highly recommend this band for the metal heads. If you're not a metal fan then you may want to pass on this one. Devil horns!

To Arkona you mean? I've been listening to Folk Metal for many years, starting with Eluveitie. They're still one of my favourite bands and I'm in good contact with them as well. In my explorations to find new bands I came across Arkona one day as well. I found their album От Сердца к Небу (Od Serdtsa K Nebu) and was blown away. I still think it's one of the best albums in Folk Metal. Arkona have become very popular here and can be seen often. I know many people who, when Arkona are added to a festival or tour line up, react like "not AGAIN!". Same goes for Eluveitie, by the way.

Well, they don't play Folk Metal in the popular radio stations here either, as they sometimes do in Scandinavia. But we have a huge scene of thousands and thousands of people who enjoy music that is based on our roots, and there are enough listerners to make tours and festivals worthwhile. You could spend an entire german summer with a festival every weekend and you would still miss a lot. This is a big reason why living here is great fun. But don't forget that living in the US has upsides too: you have a lot of space and great wilderness, things that have become rare in central Europe. Let me know if you come to Germany, I think it would be fun to show you around some good old fashioned medieval market.

Central Europe is densely populated so you're never far from the next city. You can still get away from people, but the woods are nowhere as large and wild as in Montana or in Alaska. I don't know if it's better or worse compared to the eastern US since I haven't been there yet. We do have wild wolves here, though, the closest pack is roaming just 20 kilometers north of here, and of course there's huge wildernesses in the Alps and in Scandinavia, which both are not too far away from me. I probably have to cover less distance to the deep Swedish woods than the distance you would have to cover to get beyond a neighbour state... So yeah, all in all living in central Europe is good

My neighborhood is the woods! :P haha, I'm lucky but it's still not the same because I know I can walk for a while and easily find a road if I know what I'm doing. I did live in the Western states for a few short years and I could have easily gotten last. The total population of a town that I lived in was 1000 and the closest city was a few hours away even driving at 80MPH. I do kiss that but at the same time I sorta disliked it. Mostly liked it though. haha.
I'm gonna do a review later tonight. Right now I'm playing guitar.

Dance of Death!...or Saltatio Mortis! Another Metal band.
Ebenbild
Another kick ass metal band. They use electric instruments along with traditional acoustics. Their videos are pretty awesome although I haven't seen a live performance video but its probably equally as exciting. I also havent heard a song in english but they may have some. So here's another great band for you metal heads and metal heads need to hang around cause the next two bands are also metal if I'm not mistaken. Sorry for not sharing as many reviews lately, I've been caught up and will probably continue to be caught up for the next few weeks but be prepared for at least five reviews a week! Hope you guys like this, I enjoy them.

Damn, reading that Omnia blog really makes me think why Steve still has friends at all... You see, Joe was Omnia's guitarplayer until the Alive album, then he left because Steve became too douchey. The new guitarplayer, Philip, wasn't overly amazing but he did a decent job. But now Steve writes: "Gosh... after jammin' and recording with Joe Hennon these last couple of days ... I do realise how much we miss a really good guitar sound sometimes... sweet!" ...which is a kick in the nuts for Philip really.
Saltatio Mortis comes twofold, they play both metal and acoustic medieval music! Both show types are awesome. Their new album reached #1 in the German music sales charts, which shows how popular they are here.

How do you know them all in person? I mean sure the festivals but I mean I'm sure they're busy with shit tons of fan so obviously they'd come off a little cross. Awesome video by the way, I think I prefer their acoustic sound.

Yeah, I prefer their acoustic stuff too.
In both the folk scene and the folk/pagan metal scene it's not so much of a fan-musician-relationship, but more of a human-human relationship. The scenes are not too large, you can always find a few minutes to talk, and often the musicians even recognize you later. In the case of Omnia: I'm at Castlefest every year, and my girlfriend has been part of it since the very first edition. Everyone knows everyone and the scence is not so huge so there's never too many fans. If you want to you can always find a moment to talk to pretty much any musician in the folk scene. On festivals they're enjoying the markets too, and you find them in front of the stages watching befriended bands. If you engage in a balfolk dance (large group row dance) where you exchange partners every few beats, chances are you'll dance with members of several bands in a few minutes. It's all a big family really
Example of a balfolk dance, starts at the 15 second mark:

It reminds me of the grateful dead. I read an interview about how they thought about concerts. Their concerts everyone danced and it was one huge social event then they had other bands which turned the singer or guitarist into Gods and people started coming to concerts to see the figure head and watch the show. It became all about showmanship.

This band is called Fejd!
A folk metal band that is more folksy than metal, they have tons of awesome videos and their instruments are electric but mainly acoustic including a lute, nyckalharpa, drums, electric bass, among many other acoustic instruments. Like I said, they have GREAT videos online and so far I've only heard their music in languages beside English but they're very good. If you like soft pagan folk with a slight metal edge then this is definitely the band for you.

Yeah, they sound awesome!
This next band is a little weirder in my opinion, very creative but not for the faint of heart. All their songs are Scandinavian based and in a strange tongue. Haha.
Garmana
I liked that video in particular. They have a very unique sound, acoustic instruments mixed with electronic keyboard I believe that gives some of their songs a rap beat or some an almost techno beat, it's really weird but pretty good. Their song gamem y'all might have heard before if you play racing games. Try definitely have a strange tezture to their music but I like them from what I've heard. I have more diggin to do but if you guys like strange beats accompanied with acoustic instrumentation well then be my guest and check this one out.

That's what I figured, ill get a review in tonight. I've been listening to a few bands on my list. I'm overwhelmed by all the bad ass bands over there.
Modern music in the US is essentially complete and utter shit in comparison. I actually want to move to Europe now, is it hard to get a job out there? Haha.

Depends on what your profession is. Obviously it's easier for citizens of EU countries to move around and apply in other EU countries, but some fields are always short of workers. For concerts and festivals it would be best to move to Germany or the Netherlands. Shroom-wise the Netherlands should be first choice of course

Shrooms are legal to grow and possess, and sclerotia are even legal to sell. In Amsterdam there are tons of shops where you get all sorts of spores, growing materials and other stuff like cacti, MAO inhibitors, DMT plants...
Back to the music: I found a fascinating musical project run by a Swedish guy, slow shamanic stuff:

So freedom is abundant in the Netherlands?
Any who, out of all these bands which are your top...eh, six?
Dunkelschon
This band is pretty bad ass. Celtic folk rock, first folk-rock pagan band that we've had and they seem pretty awesome. A little more electric than I would have thought from reading their bio but they make it work well. I've grown to expect either really soft music or really hard metal from these pagan bands but this particular band struck me as right in between so I you guys are trying to look for a sort of middle ground between the common sounds of the bands I've reviewe then this is a good one to check out.

Yes, the Netherlands are the only country I can truly call free. The feeling to step out of the train in Amsterdam central and walk less than five minutes to the first well-equipped growing store with shelves full of spore prints, Alex Grey posters, Paul Stamets books... indescribable. And usually it's even empty in there because most people go to Amsterdam for the weed
I couldn't possibly name a short list my favourite bands, too many are so damn good. I can name one number one though: Wardruna. I usually like my bands judging by how well they perform concerts, and Wardruna concerts are magnificent beyond description. They're like an invocation of the past. To me Wardruna is more than music. I also like Fejd a lot, again because their performance is fantastic. I still like Omnia a lot, but pretty much only stuff until the Alive album. The Paganfolk album is a masterpiece, I listen to it every few days. Faun should be on the list of course, they're legendary in Germany. They play so well that sometimes I'm glad to hear a little mistake so I know they're actually playing live. I love traditional Irish music too, bands like the Bothy Band or Planxty. I'm quite sad I never had the chance to see these perform. On the darker side of folk I love Dead can Dance and Empyrium. On the Scandinavian side: Valravn, Virelai, Asynje, Garmarna, Hedningarna. On the medieval side: Schelmish, Corvus Corax, Qntal. On the Folk Metal side: Eluveitie, Arkona, Månegarm. On the darker and more spiritual side of Metal: Wolves in the Throne Room, Agalloch, Moonsorrow, Helrunar, Dordeduh, Negura Bunget.

I love how you categorized them. I was trying in vain to give them a simple category. I have a list of favorite bands and I'm trying to fit these bands in but they're hard to fill in because their sound is so unique, I still have many many many more to review and it seems like I'm always so busy, it's hard to even get an hour to listen to a few full songs. It's relaxing when I do though. This is the only music that can rival the sixties folk revival and psychedelic rock bands.

Loreena Mckennit- Highway Man
This one in particular is more for fans of pretty vocals and soothin old folky music. It's really female oriented in my opinion but still quite good. I'd recommend it for just a relaxing day after thrashing about all week to Arkona, haha. Glad to actually pump out a quick review. It's hard to learn about these bands in such a short amount of time but I've heard this woman on pandora plenty although I honestly hit the skip button more often than not because its a little soft for me. This song in partiular is awesome an I really l love it!

What do you think about Dahm the Bard and Spiral Dance?
I think I'm gonna do a review on Qntal or Neun Welton next, it's so hard to choose. There's too many awesome bands, I get caught up in one and I keep goin back to listen to it more and more, lol.
So far my favorites are Omnia, Dahm, Faun, Blackmores Night and Wardruna.

I don't like Damh too much. When it comes to minimalistic guitar-and-singing I prefer traditional songs because they almost always have interesting lyrics. Damh writes his own lyrics, they don't seem too interesting to me. Some great traditional songs and their themes if you want to have a listen:
-Fields of Athenry - Getting deported to Australia for stealing a handful of corn
-Der wilde Wassermann - German fairytale about a merman who traps a normal woman into the water, fathers 7 children with her, and when she wants to get back to the land he says "let's split the children! 3 for you, 3 for me. What about the seventh? Let's split that one too! And then she stays with him to keep the child alive. There's a cool Faun version of this song.
-The Well - a woman bears six children and still has no love in her life. Why? Two of the children were fathered by her brother; two by her uncle, two by her father. All the babies were killed. I love how such morbid lyrics hide behind pretty songs. There's a great Omnia version of this song.
-Herr Mannelig: a very very ugly troll asks Mr. Mannelig if he can please please marry her. She has been cursed and will become human again if he agrees. But he doesn't agree because as a troll she's too ugly.
I had never heard of Spiral Dance, which is not surprising since they're from Australia. I listened to a few songs and they don't make me overly excited, but they sound nice.

I've heard all those songs, haha. Love em too. It's funny I just saw a OMNIA song that felt sorta like a pop song, it was called love in the forest, the chick is so hot though but it sounded like pop, not to say tat it wasn't good but just funny in a cheesy way. Lol.
I hate pop but it wasn't a bad song at all.

Well, I guess it depends on how expensive domestic flights are in the US. In Europe travelling around is not very expensive so travelling to other countries for a concert is quite normal among music lovers.

That video is bad ass, long too. I want to do a review but I've been putting so much time into guitar, working out, family and community shit that I barely have time to think let alone listen to music that I can't play on my guitar because I suck, lol.

Depends on what you're looking for. In terms of music and nice people who share your musical taste I'm pretty sure you could be very happy here, for example. I can't speak for everyone, but my own life is pretty damn good. I have everything I need, the concerts are just one part of the big picture. I play several instruments. Started with the piano but in the last years I've been focusing on traditional folk instruments. These days I spend a lot of time with the bodhran and I'm working on alternate guitar tunings like DADGAD and open tunings as well.

I saw a video of OMNIA and I see what you mean about Sic being a dick. I don't understand why, his earth love shit comes off really positive. Daphyd said, I learned an E in DADGAD tuning on guitar and Steve was just like, "shut up, Daphyd, no one cares." It was kinda in a jokin way but still. Then another time he was showing people around backstage and he says, "these are the props..." Ten second pause, "oh, it's the band!" Still a joke but I got a hint of douche bag when he said that. I don't know, I don't get him.

Sorry i hvent done one in a whole week. ive been busy as hell ad when i do have time i find myself listening to the bands ive already reviewed just to relax, haha.
Theatre Des Vampires
This gothic metal band interested me because I love vampires and apparently they do as well, they have a serious cult vampire wanna be following and I read on wiki that the lead singer sometimes cuts herself with razors and lets the audience drink her blood but some places won't allow her to perform because that violates the suicuide blah blah law of Europe. That makes them awesome IMO, haha. The music is good and it's not SUPER HEAVY metal but its fairly theatrical at times and that makes it more interesting IMO. I've been looking through my list of bands and I was trying to do them in order but I became frustrated doing metal bands over and over and that's sorta the order it's in so maybe ill try to find a different genre next. Thanks for staying tuned.

I don't know, I don't get him.
Well, he gets positive feedback from many devoted fans so I guess it's a bit of a rockstar/(god complex mechanism. Some fans even imitate his hairstyle. What I find strange is that so many people still like him. The folk scene is so full of incredibly nice people, including quite a few skilled musicians who left Omnia because they couldn't possibly stand Steve anymore. Most Omnia fans have turned their back on them by now, we'll see how much time passes until they break up. It's all really sad because the music they used to make was absolutely amazing. I don't know how many times I've listened to the Paganfolk album, and still everytime I think "damn, this is incredible".
(Some people also say Steve consumed too many substances that are legal in the Netherlands )

I still like him, he seems cool although maybe a bit of a rock star complex as you said. Maybe he's had too much time in the lime light and just needs a little bit of humility and a humbling experience. I also notice how people look up to him and when other bands play it's about the experience of dancing and just being in the moment but when people see OMNIA I see lots of people just staring in awe. I've listened to an interview of Jerry Garcia where he compared rock star figure bands to jam dance bands (for lack of better terms), some bands have a fan base that idolizes the band and they come for the showmanship and to look up to their figurehead and some the other kind of bands have a fan base that comes to just enjoy the experience, unity and love of music by dancing and meeting new friends. I think OMNIA is sort of rock star and wardruna and faun are more jam and dance.
That's just how I figure it. I still love OMNIA and Sic is still pretty cool but if I performed with them I'd have to tell him off for some of his high style glamour remarks.
Oh and fans copying his hairstyle is LAME as fuck.
Dreads are awesome though, I had them for several years. May grow em again one day.

Faun and Wardruna are WAY more impressive to watch than Omnia and leave a lot more people standing there in awe. I'm dancing and singing at pretty much every concert I go to, though; these three bands included. (At Faun concerts I'm actually relieved to hear mistakes at times just to be sure they're actually playing live, most of the time it's so perfect it could be mistaken for playback easily.)

I'm glad that there is still a movement that's alive today celebrating that kind of music. Some great music has been presented, thanks for turning me on to it. But can any of it compare to this?

Great post! You make a great point for debate! In fact, Jethro Tull is one of my all time favorite bands and without a doubt I feel as if some of the bands that I've mentioned can easily compete with jethro Tull, EASILY. It simply depends on your tastes...
I love Jethro Tull and that band is one of a kind and if you check out several videos you'll find some one of a kind bands and you'll find several bands that seem similar but have unique attributes.
I recommend Omnia, Faun, Blackmores Night. These bands could easily challenge JT in greatness in my humble opinion. These bands are fascinating as was Jethro Tull.

I love Jethro Tull as well, but I consider them more of a rock band and I like the traditional folk bands more. Some great folk bands had their best time in the 60s/70s too, like Planxty and the Bothy Band.

Schandmaul...
If you even have to ask why this band is awesome then just fast forward to 2:15 and watch for fifteen seconds...need I say more? This band is folk rock folk metal medieval. In my humble opinion it is one of the best bands that I've reviewed. They use electric guitar, bass and drums along with other traditional instruments, you'd know that if you watched the video of course you'd have to watch it twice if you were distracted at the 2 minute mark as I was... Enjoy.
PS. Listening to Faun has me liking them more and more...haha.

They're very very popular in Germany and regularly hit the top 10 sales charts with their albums. Of course it sells well to have a violinist in a bikini on stage. I don't like the singing so I don't listen to them much anymore.

What other bands should I be looking at? I've glanced at my list and it seems mostly composed of mainly metal, not that there is anything wrong with that but it's not my favorite genre. I prefer the more folksy or rock stuff.

How can I know which bands you know already and which not? You can have a look at European festival line ups, for example. Check recent years of Castlefest, Festival Mediaval, Mittelalterlich Phantasie Spectaculum, Burgfolk, Feuertanz Festival, Trolls et Legendes, Hörnerfest... Another good idea is to listen to the last.fm radio stations of bands you like, their algorithm for selecting similar bands is quite good.

That's what I was going by.
Most of these bands I barely know anything about.
