Early Morning Chat
    #19139875 - 11/15/13 07:27 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

What's happinin pub? I haven't started one of these in a while. Just got done taking a shower after doing 30 minutes meditation. About to eat some cereal and kick it out in the garden. Think it'll be coffee for me this morning instead of tea as I feel more tired than usual. Gotta work today. Thinking I might go to a kirtan in Santa Monica tonight. I LOVE singing kirtan!

What are you, my sisters and brothers up to on this fine day?

Cool bro glad someone made one cuz I was lonely. I just chanted Hare Krishna in the shower , drank chamomile tea, took magnesium, snuggled my purring cat who sat on my shoulders for half an hour and downed 3 tsp of kratom in greek yogurt (tons of protein). Now I am going to drink a coffee and smoke a joint, then work out, then meditate.

My pay is late though so that is no bueno, but I will be patient like yoda.

what i normally do is just put my headphones on, listen to some really peaceful relaxing music, usually ambient type of stuff.

then i'll lay down in a comfortable space, and just bit by bit try to relax each muscle in my body. also breathing in to the count of 7 exhaling to the count of 3. then once i feel relaxed i just try to quiet my mind and just relax i guess.

meditation is really great. something that can help keep me more balanced! i need to make time for it!

have you ever meditated before? if so, whats your process?

Three good methods:

Buddhist:

Sit in lotus position with hands folded in lap, back of one hand resting on open palm of the other, tips of thumbs touching evenly.

Inhale through the nose eyes closed, focusing on the sensation of air entering the nostril openings, while thinking "I am breathing in" or just "in". Hold for a moment then exhale through the nose focusing on the sensation of air exiting the nostril openings while thinking "I am breathing out" or just "out".

This is called annapannasati and is the method used by the Buddha himself under the Bodhi tree to attain enlightenment.

Hindu:

1. Sit in lotus position. Procure a mala (a prayer necklace with 108 regular beads and one larger master bead). Rest the hands on the knees, tips of index fingers touching thumbs. Hold the first bead between the fingers of the right hand. Chant "OM" long, loud and vibrated for a full exhalation. Take a deep inhalation. Repeat and move another bead through your fingers. Thus chant 108 times OM. You will feel the large bead and know you are finished when you have progressed through the mala.

2. Find an icon, statue or painting of krishna. Sit in lotus position. Gaze at the icon of krishna while chanting aloud "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare".

This is the maha mantra (supreme mantra) and according to the vedas (the authoritative sacred texts of hindu religion) it is the surest way to salvation in this present kali yuga (the dark age of suffering we are currently in).

If you wish you can use the mala and chant the maha mantra 108 times.

HARE KRISHNA!

Going in for my first CT scan ever in an hour. Sucks Im gonna get hit with radiation, but id rather sit there for 5 minutes instead of a 30 minute MRI.

Hopefully I can get some bud after.

Does need to be any particular position ime.
I just sit in comfy pose, usually half lotus and observe thoughts or focus on breath, just counting it in mind. Both methods worked for me.
When observing thoughts, don't follow thoughts, cause they will only lead to other thoughts and will never end. Or you could follow to the source of thoughts,
when source is found then mind will be peaceful.

Sit in any comfortable position such as cross legged, half lotus, zazen (kneeling) or upright sitting in a chair (throne) or even lying flat on the back (wand).

However lotus is the ideal most desirable pose, followed by half lotus, followed by cross legged (zazen is equal to lotus if in zen tradition).

But just sit anyway you can. Its just that lotus is the most stable position.

Dont worry about it though! cross legged is totally fine.

However, if you can not sit in lotus I highly recommend beginning yoga (hatha/asana yoga). I recommend this for everyone regardless but if you cant sit in lotus, take yoga and by the end of the year chances are you can.

Again though dont fret, just get comfortable and the important thing is try not to change position or move unless absolutely necessary during the course of your meditation.

Hey dude, if you are being exposed to radiation, I highly recommend ingesting spirulina, chlorella, miso, rosemary tea and cilantro afterwards.

They all help reduce the negative effects of radiation, for real.

well, those seem like good options, the only thing is that i can't really do those, because i can't meditate properly int he lotus position. i've got bad posture and i get too distracted by trying to sit with good posture etc.

to be honest thats why i just prefer to lay down. but i might try those three methods, but just with laying down. i think the main thing is to focus on the breathing,

also, i've had CT scans and MRI's before, its nothign to worry about. all you hear is just random clicking noises and stuff. they even play music into the tube for you while the machine is working.

kind of fitting that people are discussing meditation, get your astral plane on in the CT scan lololol

Apparently a CT scan gives you 5 years worth of the radiation we experience every day but within the span of 5 minutes.

Yes, find a position that works for you!

Lying flat on your back is called wand posture and its legit, only problem is you are more likely to fall asleep!

Better than wand posture is Shabassana (corpse posture) which is basically the same, lying on your back with the legs spread wider than hip distance and the arms slightly out to the side with the shoulder blades drawn back and the palms of the hands facing up, backs of hands resting on the ground.

That is an excellent posture for your body!

And although scans may be nothing to worry about, radiation exposure is cumulative and there are so many sources of radiation in modern life (cell phones, wireless internet, Fukushima etc) that it is wise to take anti-radiation supplements such as rosemary, spirulina, chlorella, miso, melatonin, and topical iodine. Especially if you go through airport or medical scans!

Your welcome. Take melatonin too! I am not bullshitting I researched this a lot and those things really help for radiation! You might want to take them before and after you go through, especially consider taking melatonin before going through!

so do you think the hare krishna chant, and the mantra you mentioned before to chant 108 times has any real significance? to be honest me myself i cant see any logical basis of how it will assist with the meditation process

also, the shabassana that you described is basically what i normally do when i meditate.

also, whats your opinion on music assisted meditation? you think its a positive or a negative?

Generally I meditate in silence. However, using meditative music is nice sometimes and nothing at all wrong with it, especially if there is distracting ambient noise in your environment. Better to listen to nice meditation music than street noise for example. However, dont use it all the time. At least sometimes (half the time) meditate in silence, but feel free to use music.

I personally believe the mantras have significance, in fact I know they do because they do for me. But I am married to a Hindu and I am connected to Hindu culture, so it may be different for you.

Remember that the Vedanta (vedic/hindu religion) is incredibly ancient. These people have been meditating for thousands of years. They have thousands of years of trial and error and experience in finding out the best ways to meditate. So I think it is wise to follow there instruction.

OM in particular is definitely effective. Both Hindus and Buddhists and SIkhs revere and use it. It has a uniquely rich, resonate, vibrating sound that vibrates and massages the body and has all kinds of profound significance to it.

If you have to choose only one mantra (and usually you should as a beginner stick to one mantra only for a year or so) I say choose OM. There is always at least one person chanting OM somewhere in the world at every second of every day, and there has been for thousands of years.

The human mind ascribes meaning, and meaning is powerful for the mind. The meaning of participating in an ancient wisdom tradition stretching back thousands of years in an unbroken chain of spiritual practitioners is pretty deep, and making up some random sound is just not going to be the same in my opinion.

If you are not a Hindu or do not relate to Hinduism, feel free to avoid the Hare Krishna mantra. However OM is a mantra everyone should really use, not only because of its deep spiritual significance but also because of its unique resonant and vibratory qualities.

I think in the beginning stages of meditation that sheltering yourself from distracting noises is useful. Once one reaches a certain degree of comfort though, I think it's more beneficial to allow outside noises and stuff. What are we really training for when we train in meditation?

I find that the more silent the better, and the more free from distractions (phones ringing, bugs biting etc) the better, but the key is to meditate no matter what, and ignore those distractions that do occur.

I think once one reaches a certain level, such distractions become just as irrelevant as discursive thoughts.

for myself music works well. i prefer it to meditating in silence. i find it augments the experience for myself. otherwise i get distracted in my thoughts and stuff. i've never worked out how to properly quiet my mind.....

well thats the thing though about mantras, your obviously well learned on this topic and realise the significance of the mantras, and understand the meaning of them. compare the situation to a person who has no idea what the mantra means or what its purpose is, i can't really see how the mantra would have an effect on them!

But then again, as you say, these people who teach these methods have been meditating for thousands of years, and so if they have carried on the tradition for that long, then there must be a reason for it i guess!

i like the "om" symbol.... i actually saw the "om" symbol in my first DMT trip, before i even knew what the "om" symbol was or what it meant. or maybe subliminally i did. anyways, i found out what it was later and had a flashback and thought it was cool as shit!

in terms of mantras, i usually just repeat some kind of sentence to myself such as " be at peace " or something.

interesting stuff though! i've got to start making more time for meditation in my daily routine.

also, whats your purpose for meditating? what do you seek to achieve from meditation?

for myself it's mostly just relaxing myself and centring myself. taking time out for myself etc.

I recommend just using wikipedia to read the article on the mantras. Read the wikipedia on OM and Hare Krishna for a bit of context and then try it yourself and see!

I meditate for relaxation, to calm and center myself, and to reduce stress and suffering. I also meditate because it has myriad proven health and psychological benefits, and has actually been shown to change the physical structure of the brain in beneficial ways.

Furthermore if I stop meditating for prolonged periods of time a feeling of panic and despair slowly creeps up on me. I am convinced meditation is the most important and essential thing to do in human existence, for me personally.

If I do not do it I feel like my life is slipping away and my vital energies are being dispersed. If I do it every day before work I feel at peace with life. Actually there are two things I consider essential to do before work every day- exercise and meditate. If I can do both each day before work I am at peace with my self and my life.

Finally, I meditate because I aspire to attain enlightenment, nirvana and liberation.

I don't know if I ever will in this life but I think aiming for that goal is a good idea.

I find it all around makes my life better and find all kinds of interesting benevolent situations seem to randomly occur when I do it on a regular basis. The biggest and most immediate benefit I find from it is increased patience. Patience is such a valuable thing.

You guys should watch this awesome documentary:

The first part is about how some sects of hinduism smoke marijuana constantly and consider it sacred to Shiva. Pretty awesome. As a hindu I am adopting this path in my own way.
