Where to live in the states?

So once I get out of college, I'm gonna start looking for a job and since I'm potentially going to be an engineer, I don't think it will be too difficult. Where would you guys suggest living in the states based off your own travels? I'm looking for some place where the people are primarily friendly and accepting, some nice scenery(good for tripping), not completely in the middle of nowhere. I've been meaning to check out Silicon Valley but I haven't gotten the time to head there yet.

Almost every major city is pretty cosmo Hell, even Houston in Texas isn't exactly filled with conservatives (or is it Dallas?)
I personally would live mostly anywhere along the coasts, minus florida.
The only time you run into hicks or villagers are smallish towns. Even one of my very good friends, whom I consider somewhat smart but definitely a villager once asked ''What the hell is in NYC'' we lived four hours away.

I suggest Oregon or Washington, both beautiful states super green and has progressive thinking. However If I were to choose a place to live I would probably pick a suburb outside of San Fran, It's a dope city I felt very at home, very welcomed and even more calm and peaceful.
There's so much history and culture there, plus it seems like all the pros I know in "the game" have made the best cheapest connections through meeting people in SF. Also I love the weather in NorCal, it's my favorite type of weather. The bad part about the city is EVERYTHING is so fuckin expensive and it's a huge tourist location. Good part of a suburb is you can go to SF or Yosemite or even go camping in the Sequoias'. If you get bored of that take a trip to Oregon or something.
The last thing i'd like to mention is there's some damn good whitewater rafting in Cali and Oregon, if it's considered a sport it my favorite sport, the rush is unimaginable for me. Although after I almost drowned in a lvl 5 rapid I'm very hesitant to do it again. No matter how much training you've had or experience in rafting there's NO WAY of controlling whether or not you will fall or get tucked under the water. Even the owner of the company said he didn't think I was going to make it.
Best wishes OP, wherever you end up I hope you find happiness and prosperity

Dallas is the one you're thinking of. By some polls, Dallas is considered Democratic in majority.
OP, I would suggest seriously considering the economy of the state that you're interested living in. In some states it is considerably harder to get a job. Also the cost of living in proportion to the earnings you'll be making is something else to think about.
I'd recommend Texas, for the economy and cost of living; but being a Texan, I think that would give me a bias. Drug laws here are somewhat harsh; but criminal process favors the criminals in comparison to most other states. I don't really know how big the job market for engineers in Texas is, but it's probably not any smaller than other states.
Once I make enough investments to have a sustainable trickling income, I plan to move to New Mexico for the beautiful scenery, pristine wilderness, and lack of tourism (compared to Colorado).

In fact, just stay out of Texas altogether.

I'd be scared shitless to live in texas, you can get 15 years for a small bag of pot from what I hear. I always have super dank dro on me for medical reasons so I would have a HIGH probability of getting caught. Which sucks cause I'd really like to visit some of the southern states but it's not worth the risk.

Live in a major city, and live in the city proper. You're young and will probably have a decent job so now is the time to do it. You may decide city living isn't for you or you might love it. Regardless I think everyone should live in a high rise in the city at least once in their life.

I'd like to know this too. I'm thinking of returning to the states one day and settling down. I like places where drugs are easy to get and good quality, there's lots of available nature, not too crowded, maybe near some mountains, good weather. From my research it seems that California would fit the bill, despite the high prices. Seems that lots of people outside of california have something against it, but I think it would suit me perfectly. Might also be worthwhile for you to look into OP?

That's definitely a thought. Not sure if I could handle the winters though - I tend to get depressed if I go for long periods without sunshine

Stay away from the SW. A lot of people like it because of the scenery and open spaces, but for the most part, humans have made horrible decisions in building towns and cities out there - everything is spread out, the roads are all ten lanes across, there seem to be too many cops...
I like the DC area, but that's where I from. It does have the best overall economy in the country, probably. I'm sure it is in the top 5 markets for engineering type positions (NASA, all the research facilities like NIH, NIST is huge and it's all engineers, NSA, Johns Hopkins applied physics lab, military and govt contractors, etc)
Chicago seemed decent, but the weather sucks.

funny that no one has mentioned new york.
u should look into rochester, ny. i went to college there.
it's not the biggest city in america, but i think it's like the second or third biggest in new york state. it's reeeeeeeaaaalllllyyyy nice there. lots of money, lots of colleges, an aged counterculture, lots of coffee shops and art galleries, lots of asians, asian food, a really good symphony, and lots of outdoors stuff to do (out in the suburbs it's BEAUTIFUL). there is a suburb called mendon ponds or something, and wow. the place is like an elf village out of a book, with streams and bridges going through everyone's backyards n stuff. it's sort of like jersey.
check out the mushroom house in one of rochester's suburbs.

Minneapolis is very nice but if you are into smoking it might be hard to find anything. I just know this from hearing about how much you have to pay. Minneapolis is a very cool city. I like St.Louis but I am weird like that.

I tend to find the people around DC pretty pretentious. It always seems like everyone is boasting about how politically connected they are, or their most recent uber-in-depth-cultural experience, or how professional they are etc. etc.
Dramatically different from nearby Baltimore, which has much more blue-collar roots.

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen a more stereotypical ignorant American post. This is why the rest of the world thinks Americans are generally ignorant
so do you have MMJ?are citizens allowed to pack?do you have a beach that's actually warm?everything I said was true ..

Ya dude Canada is totally like that.
I'll be right back though, I have to go out and forage the dense forest for my dinner; should probably grab some water from the stream too while I'm out so I can bathe later. It's not the collecting part thats a pain in the ass, it's starting a fire to boil it so it won't be like bathing in a large cup of cold soup. Yup.

We do have guns, beaches, and real summers (85-95 F on the warmer days around here.) There are parts of Canada where there's no day in the winter and no night in the summer, but few people live there. The shortest day is like 9 hours where I live. A good sized chunk of the lower 48 states are further north and have shorter winter days. Medical marijuana is recognized federally as far as I know.

Yeah I'm not up on the MMJ situation really, but people do get medical cards and get weed from dispensaries around here.
Edmonton is a fairly populous city for how far north it is (53 deg N) but most of Canada's population lives further south than that. Toronto's about 43 degrees north, about the same as Eugene, Oregon. About a quarter of Canada's population lives within a few hundred km of here. You can wear shorts in the summer, the beaches are made of real sand, the whole works.

In Toronto there are, and I assume other cities too. I'm not sure of the details but I knew a guy who had his medical card. I believe this is the place he went to.

They're only unfriendly online where they can stay anonymous; just like anybody else.
Canada is a cool place to visit, even if you're American.

You could say that for all of Texas. It's a small enough scene that you start to recognize faces soon enough; but big enough to still be constantly meeting new people.

My Texas experiences... Being stranded by American Airlines in Dallas when our connecting flight to Vegas left without us. Spent the evening at the holiday inn bar's line dancing competition instead of a poker tournament. And... Being pulled over by a cop at three AM in the worst smelling town in west Texas.

Damn didn't realize how many responses I'd get. I've never been to Canada, but I'm currently living kinda close, bout 4 hours, gonna take a drive to Montreal in the winter at some point, see what I think of Canada.
I'm definitely not moving to Texas, sorry, my buddy is from there and has very few good things to say about Dallas, at least compared to some of the other places hes visited.
I've been to Colorado and I really liked it but I'd most likely live in a city and I wasn't huge on Denver, although everything outside was incredibly beautiful.
I still think I'm leaning towards Silicon Valley but I have heard the taxes are outrageous which may be tough. Definitely gonna check out Seattle and Portland as well.
I'm really just looking for some place where the people are accepting. I've been to places, for example Boston MA. Real nice city, quite liberal and super accepting of herb smokers, but the people there just weren't that friendly compared to other places I had visited. I'd try to shoot the shit with people on the street and they just didn't seem interested. Where as when I visited my buddy who lives a in suburb about an hour outside LA, the people there just seemed very open and willing to converse with outsiders.

There's the problem. Dallas.
Dallas.
Dallas.
Ask anyone in Texas who isn't from Dallas what the worst city in Texas is. It's Dallas.
Houston is badass. We are probably the most ethnically diverse city in the country, maybe even the world. I know my university is the #2 most ethnically diverse in the world. Houston is SUPER cheap. Living expenses in general are very affordable. gas right now is 2.85 a gallon. there are no harsh winters here. the people are very friendly but not in the 'fake' alabama/mississippi way. houston got ranked the #4 destination that "millenials" are moving to this year (and austin #5). there is no income tax here. there are LOTS of jobs here. food is cheap. If you want to know who likes living in texas, well, don't ask the people who grew up up here- unless they've away for a while and found out how good they had it. Ask the people who moved to texas. these people will tell you how wonderful texas is. The people who have been here for their whole lives are spoiled and dont know any better
and again. our mayor is a lesbian. i was caught pot twice when I was younger and just had it confiscated with a warning on both occasions. we can't be THAT backwards.

I don't see what's so bad about Dallas.
It certainly isn't a good place to visit, which is why I think most people dislike it so much.
There's parts to avoid where materialism and elitism runs high, but that's in any major metroplex.
*Houston may be one of the most diverse, but it's also the fattest city in america and one of the most polluted.

uih, no. this is not based on conjecture. this is based on an article I recently read. it has to do the energy industry. try doing research instead of just having intuitions. come check out houston, dude. it isn't just blacks, whites, hispanics, and asians. we have people from EVERYWHERE.

and in any case, whatever houston is good at doing, dallas is just barely lagging behind, so when we were the fattest, they were probably in the top 3

Found one http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/HS/htm/HS.481.htm These are what are prohibited, plus Im pretty sure they can claim something is laboratory apparatus and still charge you
(A) a condenser;
(B) a distilling apparatus;
(C) a vacuum drier;

Having a hard time finding the specific law, but hers a link to a thread on sciencemadness about it http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=7366
Found one http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/HS/htm/HS.481.htm
thanks too bad it's such a monster of a document. looks like they have bongs syringes and all sorts of stuff listed there though so there must be all sorts of caveats allowing for different levels of restrictions on sale and possession cuz I can definitely buy both of those no questions asked

Houston Surpasses New York And Los Angeles As The 'Most Diverse In Nation'
Ya thats bullshit.
That article assumes low white population=Diverse.
Congratulations Latinos (probably 80% of which are Mexican) out number whites(which are most likely from all over Europe ethnically) Go figure huffington post has major white guilt
New York is so diverse in every way you can think. Ive been to both cities man that is just a shit stat. There are so many immigrants in New York, I’m sure there are plenty in houston too but they are more likely than not they are Mexican whereas in new york they can literally be from anywhere on the globe. You can hear almost any language in new york. You hear spanish in houston.
Plus New York (london and paris) are so much bigger and more important. I don’t mean to talk shit because i love houston but come on man. You are acting like Houston is one of the worlds great cities.

Basically you can have the glass if you register every piece of it before you buy it and if you do you have to consent to inspections, this is from digging around in some old sciencemadness threads and I don't have any references at the moment

But if they find it
Sec. 481.081. CHEMICAL LABORATORY APPARATUS TRANSFER PERMIT. (a) A person must obtain a chemical laboratory apparatus transfer permit from the department to be eligible:
(1) to sell, transfer, or otherwise furnish an apparatus subject to Section 481.080(a) to a person in this state;
(2) to receive an apparatus subject to Section 481.080(a) from a source outside this state; or
(3) to receive an apparatus subject to Section 481.080(a) if the person, in receiving the apparatus, does not represent a business.
(b) The director by rule shall adopt procedures and standards for the issuance and renewal or the voluntary surrender, cancellation, suspension, probation, or revocation of:
(1) a permit for one sale, transfer, receipt, or otherwise furnishing of a chemical laboratory apparatus; or
(2) a permit for more than one sale, transfer, receipt, or otherwise furnishing of a chemical laboratory apparatus.
(c) A permit issued or renewed under Subsection (b)(1) is valid only for the transaction indicated on the permit. A permit issued or renewed under Subsection (b)(2) is valid for one year after the date of issuance or renewal.
(d) A permit holder must report in writing or by telephone to the director a change in the holder's business name, address, area code, and telephone number not later than the seventh day after the date of the change.
(e) The director may not issue a permit under this section unless the person applying for the permit delivers to the director a written consent to inspect signed by the person that grants to the director the right to inspect any controlled premises, record, chemical laboratory apparatus, or other item governed by this chapter in the care, custody, or control of the person. After the director receives the consent, the director may inspect any controlled premises, record, chemical laboratory apparatus, or other item to which the consent applies.
(f) The director may by rule establish security controls and provide for the inspection of a place, entity, or item to which a chemical laboratory apparatus transfer permit applies.
Also the sites you'd buy it from normally, won't sell to texas. Although Im sure you can get it on the dark net

Texas - where you need a permit to buy an Ehlenmeyer flask, but it's OK to store 100 tons of ammonium nitrate in the middle of a town.

I live in Calgary and would say its a very clean city and for an engineer it is a great place to get started and get some experience. It's much easier to get work here than probably anywhere else in NA so it could be smart to live and work here until you get more experience and it is easier for you to get a job wherever.

Maybe I'm not picking up on your sarcasm; but I also live in Dallas, and it's a pretty cool city. Good people, good drugs. Big enough city to have tons of variety.
Though if you're a pessimistic introvert who never gets outside, anywhere is going to suck. You can't run from yourself.

I'm sure it's a lot better if you aren't a drug user, but being that I am, it's pretty unfriendly ime.
