Your favorite intellectuals. * 1
    #19138428 - 11/14/13 09:14 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Who are your favorite intellectuals? Feel free to post videos.

Here are a few of mine.

Neil Degrasse Tyson (if you sit through these 12 minutes you won't be disappointed.)

Terence Mckenna

Sasha Shulgin

Noam Chomsky

Salvidor Dali (this man's genius is underrated)

Jimi Hendrix (hilarious interview, he was obviously tired but if you listen to his interviews he was incredibly intelligent.)

Frank Zappa

I like just about any humble intellectual.

Richard Dawkins makes me want to pull my hair out.

Yeah Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens kind of annoy me on some of the points they've made in the past. They are certain about something that science cannot measure. I would say Dawkins is more humble than Hitchens was though.

He was a very strange person. Even if he said weird things he was intelligent. His art speaks volumes about what went on in his mind.

:rolleyes: my professors are always in a bad mood, and all they've done is memorize what somebody else found.

maybe i shouldn't say intellectuals in general, but the ones who hail academia. especially the ones who they think are incredibly brilliant and attempt to show it at every turn. they always get mad about stupid shit, worrying about something that shouldn't be worrisome  :shrug: everyone just needs to take a :chillpill:

Life's no fun when all the knowledge is handed to you it's more fun to go explore for it.

Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,

Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

yeah true it doesn't, you have to be able to reflect upon what you learn in the books. but i feel like being an intellectual type made me have to work out some issues for myself that might seem 'optional' to people and i wish more people would try it out...aint so bad lol

Linus Pauling.
Carl Sagan
Albert E.
Schordinger
Wernher von Braun

Wallace Carothers -(Invented Nylon but killed himself thinking he didn't invent shit...The following day he committed suicide in a hotel room in Philadelphia by taking cyanide dissolved in lemon juice, knowing that the ingestion of cyanide in an acidic solution would greatly intensify the speed and effect of the poison. No note was found)

Huxley definitely changed my perspective on things. I had always wanted to try psychedelics but after reading the Doors of Perception I gained the courage to do so. So, I rolled for the first time a few months back. I am actually about to try Mescaline and E/Molly. I have done shrooms though and I honestly had a better experience on the cid.

Yeah LSD is a very mystical experience I like it but only once in awhile... Huxley was interesting. The only person to ever take lsd on their death bed haha.

I forgot Lao Tzu and trAnce

Something there is mysteriously formed,
Existing before Heaven and Earth,
Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,
All-pervading, unfailing,
I do not know its name; I call it tao.
If forced to give it a name, I call it
Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

i was fairly impressed by the writing of Finnis and similar philosophists. i think i read a philosophy peace of Finnis' from ages ago, like 100 years++ or something, where he described the way of life and functioning of society, general philosophy stuff... and the interesting thing was , that when reading it , it seemed to still be in line with the struggles and problems faced by people in modern society. pretty impressive stuff though, how they can just scribe down "the way things are"

also, read "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo. the original book. best book i've ever read in my life! and i'm a person who generally hates reading. it's on another level to the modern writers of today.

rambling ftw

yeah I might have to look into him, I don't believe I know his writing. I think it is funny when people think someone like that is a psychic though...I think people that predict things are just very deep thinkers. They can foresee changes because of the way they think about things rather than actually having psychic abilities. If you look into Jimi Hendrix he was definitely one of those people.

to be honest its fairly bland unless your interested in it, they write massive novels that might get boring. but theres definitely gold dispersed throughout Finnis' writing.

i don't think it has anything to do with being a psychic or anything like that, hes just a person who has observed the way of life and functioning of society, who understands the mindset of the average person, and has scribed it all down into theories in his books! deep thinkers is the right term for it! it takes a very intelligent person to be able to do that. and not only describe human nature in such a way that it is relevant not only at the time of the book, but in the future as well

My two favorites (of people who I have read/looked into) are
Ludwig Wittgenstein
Georg Cantor

Wittgenstein actually despised the way Cantor's work was interpreted.
They both are completely undervalued tho, imo.

"Cantor states that the connection between immanent and transient reality is founded in the 'unity of the All to which we ourselves belong' " from Cantorian Set theory and limitation of size.

The guy proved proved there are different kinds of infinities.  Pretty trippy stuff.

yeah same here lol. Cantor was also deeply religious though and it is interesting to read the philosophy behind what he thought he was accomplishing (working with infinite sets).

Hmm. A writer I find interesting even though he isn't similar to those two is Stanislav Grof. He did research with psychotherapy and lsd but his book Psychology of the Future is a good read.
