azurescens mid oregon coast
    #19138206 - 11/14/13 08:36 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Im 99% sure these are Psilocybe azurescens growing well over 100 miles south of Astoria, in the Lincoln county area in Oregon. I always thought they were not supposed to grow this far south.

They are certainly a psilocybe species either way but they are all conical or flat with such a point umbo like a sombrero, they look exactly like azures to me.

No habitat shots right now but it didnt seem cultivated, i believe the habitat consisted of mulched blackberries and grasses, right nearby to the beach.

Great job expanding the known range of this species.

Would be great if you could add these pics as an observation on mushroomobserver.org to document the location.

Great, that expands the range significantly!

Another speices that occasionally turns up in the coastal dune grass habitat is Psilocybe allenii.  You will notice it because it is not so umbonate.

In a few years they'll pack up and leave, and it'll be the ovoids' turn. Lol. This is exactly why P. baeocystis all decided to move to Maine.  :outtahere:

Still havnt found a single ovoid around here so i think it will be a while before that happens.

This makes me think of posts where people say "unless you're in Astoria, they're not P. azurescens", or here in Australia, a common meme is "P. subaeruginosa does not grow in Queensland". Just a good reminder that our knowledge is very imperfect, and mushrooms don't read books.
