First grow, cakes not fruiting. What's missing?
    #19137766 - 11/14/13 07:17 PM (10 years, 7 months ago)

By neighbors bunny has got six B+ cakes and four Ecuador using BRF PF teck inoculated with syringes in a monotub with perlite . They were inoculated on October 11th and birthed Nov 4th looking very white and nice. They were soaked for 24 hours. In the terrarium he's using 100 blue LED christmas lights and a small aquarium air pump. In nearly two weeks nothing has happened and they look the same. Not even hyphal knots. Temp has been kept evenly at 76 and recently reduced to 72.

He suspect the wet perlite, soaked to capacity, is not keeping the humidity up enough? He was hopping for a system that can take care of itself as he am sometimes away for a few days. No friends will be involved as the bunny is concerned. Here in NW Oregon we've got lots of mold this time of year and opening it makes him nervous of problems.

He suspects he needs to mist and keep cakes glistening wetand the perlite is not enough.

Is the small 10 gallon aquarium pump enough FEA?

Thanks for the help.

Agreed. You need FAE.

I hate to tell you its all wrong but it is.
That's why your cakes are not working.

First of all have your friend come and make his own account. Why are you doing this for him...

1. get rid of the air pump.
2. it would if you SGFC was built properly (see below)
3. You need to mist and fan. The SGFC needs human eyes to know when to do that. You can go away for a few days harm free though.
4. Fully colonized birthed cakes are very contam resistant. You can even touch them with your nasty ass hands to put them into your SGFC and nothing bad will happen. You can open that SGFC up 3-5 times a day and nothing bad will happen.
Besides that your aquarium pump is just blowing the dirty moldy air into your chamber anyway  Put some bread in there and watch how quick it molds. The SGFC is going to have mold spores galore in it but it wont matter because your cakes are covered with mycellium which is already eating so nothing else can come to dinner.
5. The perlite would do its job if you did your job.
6. Throw away the pump

First of all the biggest wrong I see is the air pump ditch it.
second biggest is you have it resting on briefcases. The SGFC needs to be elevated and have 1/4 inch holes in ALL SIX SIDES. The bottom holes don't work if it's on a flat surface. Use some pint glasses at bare minimum to elevate it. with 1/4 holes spaced 2 inches apart from each other in a grid pattern on all six sides with 4-6 inches of hydrated perlite the SGFC will provide its own FAE naturally and keep the humidity perfect and your cakes will make mushrooms.
Finally the LEDs might work for you but a single 26W daylight(6500K) spiral florescent light will do way better

I just read here: "Distilled water is a solvent....you do not want it touching anything but spores."

The cakes were dunked in distilled water from the store. Is this a problem?

Also added a little bit of hydrogen peroxide to the perlite water (which was also distilled water.)

For clarity: Cakes dunked in distilled water. The h2o2 went into the perlite to stop stuff growing in it. Did not dunk cakes in any h2o2.

distilled water has no ions in solution. It disolves ions to get the water to a "comfortable concentration" in this way it leaches out minerals from anything it touches. Is it going to ruin your grow probably not but don't do it again.

Peroxide reacts to light. There's no peroxide left in your perlite after a few hours anyway it decomposed to water and oxygen especially with the surface area of perlite for it to react on.

distilled h2o is only good for filling up a humidifier and making a spore syringe,

It looks like the cakes were rolled in Perlite......Supposed to roll in Vermiculite. www.mushroomvideos.com/‎

Yea. It is perlite. Figured its okey to dunk as well as roll. It can come off in needed...

Yep you roll in Verm. Perlite is the other half of your problems. I can't believe I missed that but there's already so much wrong with the fruiting chamber.

You really really should watch those videos the PF tek and the SGFC/terrarium tek.

Your neighbor's bunny should stick to growing carrots. That 'monotub' full of perlite-rolled cakes is all kinds of wrong.

I like your attitude....you can come over to my house and fuck my sister!

Lol, on a real note.....rinse the perlite off those cakes and roll them in dry verm.

I would then build a proper SGFC.
