Sound like a Good FC?
    #19137212 - 11/14/13 05:17 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

It's been a few years since I've fucked around with growing any fungus, and I figured it was time to begin again. I was wanting to make a fruiting chamber in a way I've never done it before, but I just wanted to know if it sounded like it would work. It's nothing that hasn't been done before, I'm sure, but I want some opinions. Also, how automated would this be?

I was planning on getting your typical large plastic bin from Walmart, or wherever. Fill the bottom with hydroton (LECA) and water, and throw a couple air stones attached to pumps into the water. I would have a transparent lid where I would place a string of LED lights on the outside to give them the light they "need".

I would prefer to stay away from perlite, since it's a giant pain in the ass. Vermiculite is already messy enough!

Would this be a setup that I would have to spray/fan 2-3 times a day, or would this be more monotub style where I could just "set it and forget it"? Any tips would be appreciated. I need to knock these cobwebs off the brain!

the problem i see with pmp's most often is saturation and a seriuos lack of fae, find the right balance and they can work great

That's what I've come to learn. You may find that you need to fan it out frequently or put more holes in it.

If you really want to try one of these over complicated prone to failure FC's you'll want bubble bars not air stones.

FAE is replacing the air in the chamber 3-5 times an hour from what I've gathered. You usually want this to be done by virtue of how the thing is built because fanning is not FAE

There's 1000s of threads on here of people that have tried to do the same thing asking about how to fix it because it's not performing well.

If I have the name right magash is one of the few trusted cultivators that has ever advocate a hydroton tub look up his posts.

If this isn't the preferred method, will you guys point me in the direction of something that works better? I'm open to whatever works best

SGFC. Big tub 1/4" holes spaces two inches apart in a grid pattern on all 6 sides with 4-6" of perlite.

Perlite has never been a problem to work with

The SGFC is the gold standard fruiting chamber unless you're doing monotubs or have a green house.

Perfect. That's what I'll do, then.

How often will I need to open it and spray/fan?

Mist the cakes/substrate directly with a fine mist until they glisten, then fan out the chamber.

Mist again once the water you previously applied has evaporated.

Is this the kind of setup that will require daily attention, or will I be able to leave town for a few days at a time and have it be ok?

It'll be fine for a few days, just make sure your perlite is moist and you mist before you leave, then tend to them as soon as you get back.

:whathesaid:

You can leave if you have to, it's not the most optimal, but you can.
If you can tend to it daily great and if you can tend to it multiple times a day even better.
Just do what you can when you can
